I have read the first 6 essays --about 1/3 of the book. So far, it is a complete delight. I have been transported to France -- Provence and Paris. I have luxuriated in the descriptions of le grand cuisine of the pre-WW II variety. I have been reminded of meals we had in the Rhine Valley as well as in Paris, when we were young (and thin). MFK Fisher has treated me to tales from California. Anthony Bourdain has weighed in. Recently, I finished a swell piece of writing concerning Paul and Julia Child and the beginnings of her TV food career. Really, it has been a luscious read so far. More to come... As of June, 2010, I'm almost done! Finished it -- a few pages a day for as really long time. I learned so much!the only part which did not please me too much was the section devoted to Fiction. I am not known as a lover of many short stories. From fishing to foraging, from preparation of the rare to preparation of the ordinary, from chef to cook, from farm to table, it is all covered grandly. Great essays! (Isn't it nice that I agree with the editor, the delightful bon vivant David Remnick? He will be thrilled to know that. hee haw)

Actually, I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would, but I still love the random facts and all the quirky moments. Since the animated movie version is kid-friendly, I expected the same for the book, but it has some more mature moments. Like someone's head being blown apart by a cannonball. But over all, it's very silly and comic (in a good way).

Dominque's prose was delicious...and I actually found it easy to embrace her theory of what happens post-death. My complaints were that it was really hard to follow the constant switching back and forth between time periods...and keep all the characters' names straight. I actually missed an "a ha!" moment because I was thinking it was about something else. I'm usually pretty savvy with stuff like that too. Also, for some odd reason, I didn't look forward to reading the book every night, so it took a bit longer than usual to get through it. While I was reading it, I was intrigued, but when I wasn't, I wasn't attached. I think the ending was disappointing too...I didn't feel much closure with the Andrew storyline, so am even wondering if I missed something again. And the back of the book led me to believe the ending was going to wow me. no such wowing occurred. Oh well....
