Gurujeet Kalsi gurjeetkalsi — I have read the first 6 essays --about 1/3 of the book. So far, it is a complete delight. I have been transported to France -- Provence and Paris. I have luxuriated in the descriptions of le grand cuisine of the pre-WW II variety. I have been reminded of meals we had in the Rhine Valley as well as in Paris, when we were young (and thin). MFK Fisher has treated me to tales from California. Anthony Bourdain has weighed in. Recently, I finished a swell piece of writing concerning Paul and Julia Child and the beginnings of her TV food career. Really, it has been a luscious read so far. More to come... As of June, 2010, I'm almost done! Finished it -- a few pages a day for as really long time. I learned so much!the only part which did not please me too much was the section devoted to Fiction. I am not known as a lover of many short stories. From fishing to foraging, from preparation of the rare to preparation of the ordinary, from chef to cook, from farm to table, it is all covered grandly. Great essays! (Isn't it nice that I agree with the editor, the delightful bon vivant David Remnick? He will be thrilled to know that. hee haw)

Material World tackles its wide subject by zooming in, allowing one household to represent an entire nation. Photographers spent one week living with a "statistically average" family in each country, learning about their work, their attitudes toward their possessions, and their hopes for the future. Then a "big picture" shot of the family was taken outside the dwelling, surrounded by all their (many or few) material goods. The book provides sidebars offering statistics and a brief history for each country, as well as personal notes from the photographers about their experiences. But it is the "big pictures" that tell most of the story. In one, a British family pauses before a meal of tea and crumpets under a cloudy sky. In another, wary Bosnians sit beside mattresses used as sniper barricades. A Malian family composed of a husband, his two wives, and their children rests before a few cooking and washing implements in golden afternoon light. Material World is a lesson in economics and geography, reminding us of the world's inequities, but also of humanity's common threads. An engrossing, enlightening book. --Maria Dolan
