Newbery winner! I can definitely understand why. While it was a little slower to get into than last year's pick, once you do get into it, you just want to keep reading. The setting is 1936 Kansas and Abilene Tucker has been sent by train to the small town of Manifest where he grew up for a while because her father doesn't want her with her when he's doing dangerous jobs like mining. Abilene starts to learn that Manifest has a past--a secretive past, and maybe one that will explain why her dad doesn't seem to want her around now. Goes back and forth between 1918 and 1936. Mystery, fabulous characters, excellently written, with multiple historical components. No wonder it won.

The title is a play on words --- referring both the the riding clothing of jockeys and the clothing a barrister wears. The mystery centers around the killing of a jockey and the defense by our hero (Geoffry) of another jockey who has been framed for the murder. Woven throughout is the menace of an out-of-control young thug who intimidates jurors and Geoffry. As always, well researched. Not as always --- this not-so-stalwart hero flinches at the prospect of pain. Geoffry has to solve the mystery without the help of the police, though the reasons why the silly bugger doesn't get their help are (in my opinion) incredibly weak.

Ahhh man so well-written it could be called poetry. I sort of was botherred by the depiction of women as generally whores, wives, divorced wives or sex objects, but then again the narrator is a man. It wasn't offensive, just maybe a little biassed. He describes places like he had just recieved some kind of divine inspiration from god himself. so fucking pure and undiluted by precedents or preconcieved notions or cliches.
