I really can't explain it, but 900 pages about russian corn field is honestly one of the best books I have ever read.

a promising beginning to this young adults (kids?) fantasy adventure series. i especially love the illustrations! it was shorter than i was expecting -- doesn't take long to read at all. i'm glad i'm reading them now that all 5 are available, cos i'd feel ripped off if i had to wait ages til the next volume was released -- cos book 1 really does feel like just the introduction to something much greater.

This was an AMAZING book and I just could not put it down. It follows two stories for the first half of the book - Sarah Starzynski, a young Jewish girl living in Paris in 1942 and Julia Jarmond, an American woman living in Paris with her French husband and daughter in 2002. Their two stories begin to intertwine when Julia begins to research the Vel' d'Hiv', a Jewish roundup that took place in Paris on July 16, 1942. The more Julia learns about this horrific event the more compelled she is to find out what happened to Sarah after that fateful day. An amazing book that explores a hidden part of France's history during WWII. I would highly recommend this one!

The Good Stuff * This wasn't my cup of tea guys, but don't let my review affect you too much as she is a fantastic writer, and I have read many fantastic reviews of the book, but I just couldn't get into it * Bitingly funny at times * Well written and the story flows nicely told between modern day and flash backs * Author is outstanding at making you see the character she is describing, I felt like I really knew the characters even if I didn't like them * A extremely realistic portrayal of many families during the 70's * Emery is an interesting character and I really felt for him The Not so Good Stuff * The parents are so narcissistic and just bloody awful parents, that they really turned me off from getting into the story. In fact most of the characters were just genuinely unlikeable, which makes is hard for me personally get into a novel Favorite Quotes/Passages "Portia begins speaking for the cat, saying what she believes Maggie Bucks is thinking. Emery, who is sitting at the kitchen table reading the paper, assumes that Portia is giving her a cartoon-like Asian accent because the cast is Siamese." "What you do here, Connecticut Girl? Smoker Lady no here! Smoker Lady in hospital! You go home now! You go back to Greenwich! I no want you here, Connecticut Girl!" "The idea that her mother wouldn't have the same occupation as her friends' mothers enraged Anna. Who would have the nerve to give birth to children, move them into a house and declare that she wasn't going to take care of them? A drug-addicted hippie, Anna decided, that's who." What I Learned * That I was a kid during the 70's and I am so lucky that my parents didn't do any of the shit that these kids useless parents did Who should/shouldn't read * Not for me or for those with similar reading likes & dislikes * Better for a more educated reader who likes something a little more thought provoking * Bet ya my sister in law will love it -- we always have opposite reading tastes -- totally love her though!! * Please if you think this is something you might like, go for it, the writing is brilliant -- I'm just a simple girl who needs to find someone to really like and cheer for, for me to love 2.75 Dewey's (This is based on my personal experience with the book, not on the quality of the writing, which is exceptional) I received this book from HarperPerennial in Exchange for an honest review

Dick is contemplating throwing himself off a bridge, but is 'saved' by Jake. They take a long, rambling journey through Norway, and possibly some other places, but I don't know for sure because I just couldn't read it anymore. Dick is trying to escape the influence of his 'famous poet' father, but it seems like the book is an excuse for du Maurier to feature her poetic descriptions of the fjords. Dick himself seems to be suffering from bi-polar disorder, alternately in love with and disenchanted by any experience he engages in often swinging from moody to moodier almost instantly. It's enough to make the reader just as crazy.

After writing Twilight Stephenie Meyer just went downhill. 1/2 Star. Can you say whining teenager? Reading this book was such a struggle, I had a hard time finishing it. And I must add that I only forced myself to finish it because I wanted to move on to the next book - I was afraid to miss something important if I skipped it... I wouldn’t have missed much if I had skipped it, I can tell you that! The only positive thing that I can say about this book is that you get to learn more about Jacob, probably the most sympathetic character of the entire series - in my opinion. Bella Swan is such an annoying character, completely unrealistic in my book. Sure, when I was a teen I experienced heartache and insecurities too, but I never, and I do mean never, fell to the lows that she falls into. Never did I have the sense of no-worth and low self-esteem that she seems to have. I wonder how many teenage girls and young women are actually able to identify with this. I certainly couldn't. For me this is one of the worst reads ever.

** spoiler alert ** I really want to give this book a higher rating just because I liked "Passion" so much. However, this one just wasn't as good. Many times I found myself confused about references to characters and felt I needed to refer back to "Passion" to keep the story straight. I still don't understand what Sarah's problem with her mother is but maybe that will be resolved in the next book?

The goon squad is time. And we think the goon squad is for everyone but us. Jennifer Egan takes us along the corridors of time in this Pulitzer Prize winning book, and shows us what the goon squad does, getting us from A to B. One exquisite paragraph for example: As Ted sat, feeling the evolution of the afternoon, he found himself thinking of Susan. Not the slightly different version of Susan, but Susan herself – his wife – on a day many years ago, before Ted had begun folding up his desire into the tiny shape it had become. On a trip to New York, riding the Staten Island Ferry for fun, because neither one of them had ever done it, Susan turned to him suddenly and said, “Let’s make sure it’s always like this.” And so entwined were their thoughts at that point that Ted knew exactly why she’d said it: not because they’d made love that morning or drunk a bottle of Pouilly-Fuisse at lunch - because she’d felt the passage of time. And then Ted felt it, too, in the leaping brown water, the scudding boats and wind – motion, chaos everywhere – and he’d held Susan’s hand and said, “Always. It will always be like this.” Another for instance: the chapters written from the point of view of the children could have easily become precious but in Egan’s hands, instead force us to look at the meaning of silence – one of the many layers in this rich and disquieting book. Another for instance – but – you really must read it yourself. The goon squad is time. And it has visited me too.

Kavramlarla çok ilgileniyorum, ancak kitap lisede yazacağım bir rant gibi okuyor. Rastgele noktalama, italik ve böyle biten cümleler bir sürü ?? !!
