I think this was the book that really got me interested in World War 2. Upon later readings it wasn't as great as I thought, but I still really enjoy it.

This book is more relevant now than ever. Developing economies are facing a perfect storm worldwide. As the global financial crisis tightens its grip on developed economies, their demand for imported products and services as well as basic commodities, has plummeted, leaving emerging economies in an unprecedented state of vulnerability. Millions of people live in the megacities of these countries and their corrupt governments have fewer resources at their disposal to mitigate the effects of the crisis. Millions of people are already facing food and water scarcity, millions more will join them in the next few years unless the developed world makes a concerted effort to provide the support and sustained funding they need.

A well-written, emotional, easy read. It is about a nurse who was instructed to take a new born baby with Down syndrome to a care facility, but chooses to keep the child and raise it as her own. The story follows her struggles and love for this child, as well as the lives of the mother and father who gave the chlid up. Enjoyable.

Rating: 6/10 Angle of Incidence was a book that I wasn't sure what to expect of. The description was informative enough to make me want to read it, but not much more than that. So, when I started reading it, I was pleasantly surprised by both the story and character development, as well as the writing. I have read a few self-published books and what is most prominent about them was their rather obvious lack of proper revisions. While the writing was not perfect, it was definitely a lot better than other self published books I've read. The story itself is good, despite the fact that it is about a pretty popular issue; marital problems. In this case, we have Gwen and Rob, a couple who have been together for years and they are - at the beginning of the novel - expecting their first child. But then, something happens and Gwen loses the baby, leading her to become a shadow of her former self, who can't even open up to her husband and share a little of her pain and anger. And as if losing a baby wasn't enough, new secrets begin to come to light, leaving Gwen betrayed and hurt, despite the fact that she also has secrets of her own she's never told anyone about. The characters in this story were very well developed, despite the fact that sometimes what they said or did, did sound a little over the top. Gwen, for example, is an ok character. She has a good heart and is capable and strong, but her grief over her lost child sounded a little too over the top to me (I do not mean that losing a child should be easy to get over, just that the choice of words to describe what Gwen was going through at the time needn't have been so strong). Another thing that annoyed me a little about Gwen was the fact that she went on and on about how Rob betrayed her (through not telling her his secret), but then again, she hadn't told him hers. So it made her sound a little selfish and cruel and two-faced. Rob was a little better. He was trying to make the most of a bad situation foisted upon him and has no idea what to do to help his wife get out of the pit of despair and denial she has pushed herself into. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. One thing I especially liked in this book were the little photography related definitions at the beginning of each chapter, each one of which was chosen specifically for a certain chapter because of what was going on in it. I thought that was a lovely touch, especially since Gwen is a professional photographer. (Though having said that, I did notice that a few of them kept being repeated. Maybe it would have been better if each definition was only used once.) Originally posted on funny wool.

This was an ok read - nothing too spectacular, but enjoyable nonetheless.

So this is a great book for those in the west. Throughout the whole book I was curious how well this would be applied to Middle East though. Then I got to one of the last chapters and Ms. Evans told a story of the honor killing of a young girl, and baisically she said that the more opression between the sexes (as in one sex opressing the opposite sex) the less likely there will be change in verbal abuse. Bummer. I was really hoping to use what I learned in the book as a way to "counsel" couples here... there is always hope for the future though

I went into this book with a totally open mind, only to come out nauseated at just how self absorbed this woman is. What is wrong with letting your child choose what they would like to do with their lives instead of being forced into a mold their overly self serving mother would choose? The author tries to justify why it is okay for her to treat her children the way she does as it being the "chinese way". Her whole goal in life is to make her children submit to her goals that are important to her, regardless. I was totally disappointed that this turned out to be such a uninspiring book, I generally like woman who aren't afraid of doing it differently than the rest. So glad I didnt buy the book.

Augusten Burroughs is one of my favorite authors. He makes me laugh. Have met him in person and he is a great normal guy considering everything he has been through.
I really liked how it ended. It kind of dragged in some places, but so worth it. I thought I had it all figured out, but there were so many twists that it kept me on my toes. It's kind of like a fairy tale story but had a little bit more meat. A fun fluffy story that was a nice change from homework.

I'd give it more stars if I could! This is a book of essays written about the authors experience in the Vietnam war. I could hardly put the book down and now I'm a little disappointed to have it end so quickly. It is difficult to read, but gives the reader a real window into the life of a soldier. As horrifying as it was, as war is, my favorite passage was within the essay "How To Tell A True War Story". O'Brien writes about the "beauty" of war. I'm going to include it here because I read it over and over. It really had an impact on me. I remember my dad who is a Vietnam vet talking about how beautiful the country was. He has always wanted to travel back to Vietnam to be able to enjoy it. But I remember thinking how incredible it was that he was in the middle of this horrible violent war, death all around him, and he was able to see this foreign country as beautiful. [image error] O'Brien writes, "At the hour of dusk you sit at your foxhole and look out on a wide river turning pinkish red, and at the mountains beyond, and although in the morning you must cross the river and go into the mountains and do terrible things and maybe die, even so, you find yourself studying the fine colors on the river, you feel wonder and awe at the setting of the sun, and you are filled with a hard, aching love for how the world could be and always should be, but now is not."
