I think this story touched me more than anything I have ever read. Sarah's story, her despair was overwhelming. I had to get through it just so I could be finished with holding it in my hands. I am glad to have read it, to be better able to imagine the horror of this time period. And yet, my reactions, my feelings can never approach those who survived these atrocities.

When I see books like these about traveling to find self-revelation and spirituality, I instinctively get goosebumps and walk away fast. For me, they resemble all too much the pitiful self-help books. Though, I must admit, I had to see what all the fuss about Eat Pray Love was. A lot of my friends (girls of course) are all hot over this book. So I jumped on the bandwagon. Unfortunately, it turned out to be all that I had expected. Now, I had heard Elizabeth Gilbert's talk on TED and thought her a brilliant and funny speaker. However, her voice in this book makes her character appear weak and pathetic (she even admits it herself). She is confused and has almost no control over her emotions or thoughts. That sounds like a problem one should have gotten over in high school, yet she is in her 30s. Perhaps I am just not girly enough to appreciate this book's sap and spirituality. Anyhow, to each their own...

I read Then Came You in 2 sessions. It does ask important questions about egg donation, surrogacy, in vitro, and family. Even the professionals in the field have questions and concerns. But this is a story of four women, at different places in their lives and backgrounds. The book goes from one character to another, I found it easy to switch. All four women have growth and change in this story. There are characters whose families failed them completely; you can see the affects of this in their adult life. Jennifer Weiner seems to be asking what is family can you constitute your family or reconstitute your family as you see fit? I like that all of the questions are answered as far as family and healing are concerned. No judgement as to surrogacy, egg donation, in vitro, or parents who will be senior citzens by the time a child is grown is left up to the reader asit should be.

Over all I thought the book was interesting. The concepts regarding the total invasion of privacy by the government were powerful, imaginative and timely. Excellent use of imagery throughout. However, I did not like the ending too much. The arcane forms of torture and interrogation that were described seemed to be a reach. And it was not at all clear if the main character lives on, or merely hallucinates the remainder of his life.

I found this novel to be pretty interesting. It didn't blow me away nor was it as funny as the movie, but it was pretty insightful. Women are the fairer, albeit really confusing, sex. The main character Rob Fleming always seems to have problems having relationships with them. What better way to understand yourself or why you get women to eventually hate you than by examining past relationships? He had a passion for music, and it got in the way of the girls he dated. The moral of the story is that you shouldn't have a love for things that aren't your girlfriends because they need constant attention, true story. Just kidding. Or am I? (Suspenseful music plays.)

When I saw the ads for the movie coming out, I remembered how much I loved this book in elementary school. So, off I went to buy a copy. It's a great, really fast read. Anyone that just wants to escape for a day and get back to their youth, I suggest this one.
