I found the first part of the book interesting. I learned a little bit more about how food affects us and how we can improve our health by what we eat. I don't think I'll try any of the recipes though since the book was written in Great Britain and I don't have the energy or desire to translate all of the recipes into formats I can use.

Beautiful. Heartbreaking. Tightly-plotted, but not (save in one tiny instance) unbelievably so. Well-drawn portraits of human rage and human love and all the emotions in between. Also notable for the confrontation in the second-to-last chapter, which rivals Gandalf vs. the Balrog for sweep and power. Even though I knew the ultimate ending (few don't these days), it still brought me to tears when it came about. Read this, and don't let the heavily-wrought sentences of the first chapter or two get to you.

This is the best Inspector Gamache book in the series so far! I stayed up until 1 am last night to finish it. That hasn't happened in a long time. Penny masterfully weaves three stories into one. Gamache is in Quebec City recuperating mentally and physically from a tragic terrorist plot in which four of his agents were killed, and he and Jean-Guy Beauvoir were critically injured. He's staying with his friend and mentor Emile Comeau when a well-known Quebecois citizen is found murdered in the basement of the Literary and History Library. Gamache acts as a consultant to the local police as this murder is investigated. Anglo and Quebecois political and cultural rivalries are brought to the forefront and questions about Samuel de Champlain's burial site are raised. The story of the terrorist plot is played out in Gamache's flashbacks, and by Beauvoir's narrative in Three Pines where he's been sent to unofficially reopen the case against Olivier who's been convicted of the Hermit's murder. As both Gamache and Beauvoir come to terms with the tragedy they've both survived, new facts emerge in both cases, and new dimensions of both characters are revealed.

I am almost too ashamed to admit that I read this book, but I did. I was hanging out at my Grandma's house and I saw that it took place in Seattle, and I was going to move to Seattle - so I read it. It was a cheesy, predictable, romance.

I remember absolutely nothing about this book. I think maybe a rich girl was kidnapped and fell in love with her dashing captor? Was it made into a movie? I can't think of any reason why I should have read it, except I think the paperback cover had some light bondage on it and I am easily aroused.
