I originally set this rating to two stars when I added it to my library, based on my memory of having read it when it first came out. I loved Archer in the other Donovan books and I liked Hannah but I didn't remember liking this book as much as I had liked the other books. On the reread of the series, Pearl Cover ticks up a bit. I still don't love it as much as Jade Island, which is my favorite Elizabeth Lowell contemporary. I think Hannah is a great character and Archer is great, but he's written better in the other books. I didn't like his reaction to Hannah. So she wasn't ready to get married right away. She was only recently widowed, despite the last seven years of her marriage being devoid of love and even torturous. The fact that Hannah could trust at all should have been enough for him. He turned into a royal douchebag at the first mistep and it bothered me enough to lose a star. The story itself is well-written, but at times I get a little lost in the jargon. I think Hannah and Archer's backstory could have been more fleshed out. It's a good entry in the series, but not the best. Hannah is a complex heroine and enjoyable to read, however. I just wish she'd stuck to her guns at the end and made Archer wait longer. She was right to be hesitant about jumping into a serious relationship, though she did jump into the physical.

** spoiler alert ** That dude toward the end was gross. But I do enjoy the occasional chainsaw accident. I thought this was pretty good. The art was super sketchy and I did not love it. I still can't figure out exactly what happened to dude's eye. The end of this was better and more complete than the end of the movie, but the movie did a better job of setting the tone and really focusing on the "normal guy" side of things.

Ever impatient to find out the ending, I read this part of the two part biography first. Reads like a proper tragedy. Those people who reckon they could have sorted Elvis out over a nice cuppa are totally mistaken - the guy was a pure mess.

I asked for this book for Christmas of 2007, having seen it on Amazon or maybe in a store and being curious. I'm not certain what I expected, but this wasn't exactly it. I think I was maybe looking for more about cosmology and religion in Arctic societies. What I got was a very personal book about the transition from Soviet industrialization of an indigenous people's way of life, back a certain distance now toward older ways, as seen and understood by an anthropologist. Not what I was expecting, no, but a really interesting and affecting read nonetheless. Along the way, there is a lot of information that keyed into my always curious, layman scientist's mind, whether about weather, reindeer physiology, and human adaptation to extreme climates.

I enjoyed Chris Elliot much more in "There's Something about Mary". His wacky humor doesn't translate well to the written page, at least not for me. I got a few giggles out of the book, but for the most part it felt like it was written by a 13-year-old boy, just off-wht-wall.
