Kayan Lam _ — I asked for this book for Christmas of 2007, having seen it on Amazon or maybe in a store and being curious. I'm not certain what I expected, but this wasn't exactly it. I think I was maybe looking for more about cosmology and religion in Arctic societies. What I got was a very personal book about the transition from Soviet industrialization of an indigenous people's way of life, back a certain distance now toward older ways, as seen and understood by an anthropologist. Not what I was expecting, no, but a really interesting and affecting read nonetheless. Along the way, there is a lot of information that keyed into my always curious, layman scientist's mind, whether about weather, reindeer physiology, and human adaptation to extreme climates.

Katarzyna Wiśniewska _atarzyna_isniewska — This book was a fun easy read that I was able to enjoy in lunchtime segments at work. My mom recommended it to me and I had fun reading the story about the girl who falls in love with her childhood imaginary friend. It was a little cheesy, but cute with a touch of magic.

Izzy Long izzylong — Perhaps because Bulgakov's Black Snow is so specifically focused in its satire on specific personages of the Moscow theater in the early twentieth century, it does not resonate as strongly today. Some of his other works, such as Heart of a Dog and The Master and Margarita are also sharply satirical of early Soviet society, but are less specific in their treatments, and so remain accessible to modern audiences. 'Black Snow' also lacks the characteristic surrealism of these other novels, which is part of what contributes to their longevity as works of art. Whether this is intentional, or just a side effect of his rapidly deteriorating health, which the left the work in an unfinished state, is unclear. The book does, however, provide some interesting autobiographical hints of Bulgakov's own experiences struggling to succeed as an artist in the face of the Soviet censors. For this historical perspective, the novel has value, but it does not stand on its merits as a work of great writing.
