The final book of the Herald-Mage trilogy is probably the best- Vanyel as an adult is far more interesting than Vanyel as an emo teen. The story is good, Stephen's a great character (far more likable than Tylendal), and though the book is sad, it isn't too horribly so.

missing the intensity of angela's ashes. kinda awkward because it reads like someone was like "hey frank, everyone loved your first book, why don't you write another one?" and he was like "ok, i guess so". not sure if it detracted from the first or not.

This is way better than "The Things They Carried". I recomended to anyone who is interested in books with cool form, insanity, writers who don't know what is reality and what is art. Its been a while now, since I read it, but it left me with a lot of ideas about the craft of writing and the emotional implications of war.

good to hear about some of the dubious activities of the U.N. through first hand experience - and all the troubles that come with working in those kinds of organisations. I found myself getting rather irritated by the diary-entry like chapters- in that they reminded me of cheesy scenes from that movie The Beach. pity - kind of took something away from the book. However an interesting and important read. Really appreciate their bravery in choosing to share and publish their personal (painful and joyous) experiences.
