The older I get the more I realize that by reading Barthelme at 15 years old without actually understanding him, but for whatever reason continuing to read him steadily for the next decade, he has become a pretty prominent influence; my understanding of Barthelme is almost exactly parallel to my understanding of serious fiction in general.

On the pages my favorite artist comes to life and it's like sitting on his shoulder and witnessing all his struggles with art and women and saying goodbye to him on his death bed. In a form of a novel this isn't probably the most reliable source and some things may not be true at all but you can get a basic idea what kind of a person and artist Henri was. Highly recommended to his admirers.

This book, as it took me about half of it to finally grasp the concept, is a history of pretty much how the US came to be, from the pilgrims and the Mayflower and then right down to the space age. For me the book for pretty slow starting. The chapters about the founding fathers of America was pretty tough because a lot of the writing relied upon prior knowledge of the subject, of which I have very little, but past that, this book is typical Bryson. Funny whilst unbelievably informing this book is the perfect holiday read. Whilst still writing in a clever yet concise way, the facts of it all is brilliant. So many little facts that I will probably always remember and bore people with (such as the word ‘coke’ being the second most recognised international word, ahead of ‘ok’.) I was led to read this book my goal to read all of Bryson’s books, but it is truly entertaining. It’s the perfect book to dip in and out of, but if you’re like me, it works well as a straight through book. Although I wouldn’t count it as one of my favourites of his, that honour being reserved for such classics as Notes From A Small Island, I did really enjoy this and heartily recommend it with a glass of peach ice tea. (I was away and Greece and didn’t see it quite fitting for tea and a good book….)

Wow, I'm surprised at the reviews on this site. I hesitated reading this novel because it was so overwhelmingly lauded, but picked it up for an podcast bookclub. After a few pages of adjustment to the author's style, I was completely hooked and wanted to take time from work to read. The characters, so far from my own experience, are well drawn. Not particularly likeable, but as a study in privilege and boredom, this is the character-driven book to read. (One tangent--one of the reasons why I didn't pick it up originally was because reviewers kept mentioning 9/11, and I didn't want to read anything too emotional. There was nothing moralistic or heavy-handed about the attack--and it served as a fantastic plot point for one of the characters.)

May pull into question your thoughts on girls and aggression. For some of us, it's preaching to the choir.

A great book to learn about mood disorders (depression, anxiety) and how women's hormones play a huge, yet unappreciated role in the diagnosis and treatment of mood disorders. Written about 10 years ago, so not sure if modern day medicine has incorporated the effects of hormones into treatment plans; if so, the book may be a bit outdated. I thought they could've expanded more on understanding how to "take care of your brain) via the NURSE program. It could've been a shorter book. I feel like topics were repeated over and over. Overll a good book, though, especially as a reference.
