Okay I spoke too soon, she made this one an easy one and I did figure it out, at least partially.

3.5 stars. I rolled my eyes on many separate occasions whilst reading this; let's just leave it at that.

I really enjoyed this story of events that took place in my hometown (Detroit) in the jazz-age. I was unfortunate enough to be in a traffic accident on my way to hear the author speak on his writings, but at least I've visited some of the perinent landmarks.

This rates a C-. It was all right but I don't feel strongly about it. It's a short story/novella. My main objection is that I didn't buy the emotion--love--between them. Yes, they had a physical attraction, but this puritanical, moral man had no reason to love her. He didn't know her--at all. They played one game of checkers. That does not a relationship make. And she is a whore. She has been for years, and a madam. Evidently EH thinks because she's been abstinent for 2 years it wipes out the years of whoring (or maybe she was just the mistress of several different men, I can't recall now), but I don't think so. I could see him being kind to her and helping her start a new life, but they never conversed, never went outside her room, he only saw her face 2 or 3 nights without her mask. Just exactly how did he fall in love with her? If you like EH, though, it'll be a nice way to pass a few hours.

Trading the downtrodden woman for the man swallowed up by the world around him, Jude provides an interesting contrast on a number of levels to Tess of the D'urbervilles. Hardy's diction, syntax and overall narrative style is always impressive and a sign of his times.

I'm not sure what to say about Rhoda Janzen's Mennonite in a Little Black Dress . It's definitely not the type of book that I would have picked up on my own but reading out of my preferred genres is what I love about book club. Ms. Janzen grew up as a Mennonite. She tells lots of stories about the difficultly of being a Mennonite as a child. Shame-inducing foods and all. She grows up, becomes a scholar, marries and divorces a real piece of work, and while recovering from an accident travels home to visit her Mennonite past. The book is interesting. It gave me a lot to think about. I think if I had to describe it in one word I'd choose conflicted. Ms. Janzen is conflicted about her past. She's conflicted about her marriage, her Mennonite upbringing, and religion in general. Thus throughout the book she praises and then disparages and makes light of each of these things. It made for a conflicted reading experience as well.

A little bit trite and amateurish in its predictability. Still, an engaging and entertaining read. Meredith O'Donnell
