I really enjoyed reading "The Namesake" and recommend seeing the movie after you've finished reading the book. I think that Lahiri does a better job with Gogol and his parents than she does with Maxine and the family and friends in New York. The Indian characters are more richly drawn than the more one dimensional American characters.

I battled ninjas to get the ARC of this book! So worth it. This book was heartbreaking from page one. It begins with a simple but evocative description of the Everneath: it is an underworld where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Nikki Beckett chose to go to the Everneath. She’s been gone for a century — though on the surface, it’s only been six months. She Returns for another six months, this time to say good-bye to her family and friends before she’s banished back to the Everneath forever. But this time offers her a choice, too: either the Tunnels will come for her and devour the last of her emotions, or she can go back and try to be a queen — but she will have to consume the emotions of others. EVERNEATH is very myth-inspired: Hades/Persephone, Orpheus/Eurydice, even Osiris/Isis. Brodi weaves all these myths together seamlessly, creating a new and frightening underworld filled with immortals, mysterious High Court, and terrifying Tunnels and Shades. There were so many things I loved about EVERNEATH: Nikki’s voice when she Returns; her determination to learn more about Cole, the immortal who lured her to the Feed; and her relationship with her boyfriend Jack. I loved so much that Nikki and Jack had a foundation to their relationship, that they were friends first and knew each other before they became soulmates. I loved the slow way they came to know each other again after Nikki’s Return, and how they both had to fight for the chance to be together again. I loved the mystery. What happened that drove Nikki to the Everneath? Why was she willing to let Cole Feed on her emotions for a century? These answers unfolded at just the right moments. Every time I thought I figured something out before the characters, they were on it a couple paragraphs later. I loved way we saw Nikki’s life before and after the Feed. It was easy to see why she felt overwhelmed with the need to lose herself to the Everneath. And easy to see why, after her Return, she would fight so hard to stay. Even though the Tunnels are coming for her no matter what. And oh, the end. Powerful. Heartbreaking. Totally the only way this could have ended. I can’t way to see where book two takes us.

Arundhati Roy is a kind of rebel celeb in India - somebody who derives the sustenance from establishment and rebels against it. Like several others of this tribe, telling a story of troubled childhood, aimless youth spent in wandering around the world and subsequent realization of values of life is a trend. The writing is at a times cryptic but context is well depicted.
A friend I barely knew at the time recommended this book to me and it's without a doubt one of the best hard-boiled novels I've read. CW Sugrue ("Shug-Roo") is Crumley's wisecracking PI, but, contemporaneous to the 70's, he's an Viet Nam vet and part-time bartender. Like Marlowe and just about every PI since, Sugrue consumes obscene amounts of alcohol and falls in with people who he finds more fault with than we might, if for no other reason than because both detectives have an instinct for figuring what makes very bad people tick. But Sugrue is more volatile than Marlowe or Spade because he's unpredictable, much more temperamental and more involved with the mechanics of his case. Unlike Marlowe, he is frequently taking up the women who offer themselves to him, and there's even one instance wherein he's shooting the obstructive gangster type in not one foot, but both of them. A far cry from Marlowe, who was ever the self defender, but hardly the trigger puller. We also finding him citing T.S. Eliot one moment, and Willie Nelson the next, which for readers like myself scores awesome points. But what makes this novel so wonderful is Crumley's appreciation of fluid prose and cogent plotlines. If you're awaiting a huge twist that abruptly pulls the story into a neat, organized drawstring bag, you'll be disappointed. What culminates isn't all that surprising, but it is appropriate and effective. Crumley has others worth reading, but this one is no doubt his best.

I had a little bit of a hard time getting into this book, but once I did, I enjoyed it and had trouble putting it down. It's an interesting blend of horror and thriller. The characters are memorable and the writing is spot-on. I especially liked the literary ties Klavan concocted, on which the entire plot is based. It speaks to the power of the written word, in this case classic Victorian ghost stories. This was my first Klavan novel, and I'll probably start reading more of his.

Fuck Blade Runner. This is where it's at. One of the best titles ever, also.

An absolutely fascinating and informative introduction to the world of marathon running. Before I read this I never knew a sport existed where the participants could and would joyfully run distances of 50 to 100 miles. At points, I thought the book bogged down with too much technical information, but the story and richness of characters easily overshadowed this facet.

Bu kitapta sadece bir kusur buldum: kısalık. En az yüz sayfa daha okumak isterdim.
