Nadia Nabavi _adia_rt_allery — Foi uma boa leitura. Suponho que não me surpreendeu por ai além, mas conseguiu manter-me interessada. Nunca iria descobrir o mistério do livro! Muito bem desenvolvido ao longo do livro. Estou interessada em ler os restantes livros!

Noah Li ibleedgraphite — I battled ninjas to get the ARC of this book! So worth it. This book was heartbreaking from page one. It begins with a simple but evocative description of the Everneath: it is an underworld where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Nikki Beckett chose to go to the Everneath. She’s been gone for a century — though on the surface, it’s only been six months. She Returns for another six months, this time to say good-bye to her family and friends before she’s banished back to the Everneath forever. But this time offers her a choice, too: either the Tunnels will come for her and devour the last of her emotions, or she can go back and try to be a queen — but she will have to consume the emotions of others. EVERNEATH is very myth-inspired: Hades/Persephone, Orpheus/Eurydice, even Osiris/Isis. Brodi weaves all these myths together seamlessly, creating a new and frightening underworld filled with immortals, mysterious High Court, and terrifying Tunnels and Shades. There were so many things I loved about EVERNEATH: Nikki’s voice when she Returns; her determination to learn more about Cole, the immortal who lured her to the Feed; and her relationship with her boyfriend Jack. I loved so much that Nikki and Jack had a foundation to their relationship, that they were friends first and knew each other before they became soulmates. I loved the slow way they came to know each other again after Nikki’s Return, and how they both had to fight for the chance to be together again. I loved the mystery. What happened that drove Nikki to the Everneath? Why was she willing to let Cole Feed on her emotions for a century? These answers unfolded at just the right moments. Every time I thought I figured something out before the characters, they were on it a couple paragraphs later. I loved way we saw Nikki’s life before and after the Feed. It was easy to see why she felt overwhelmed with the need to lose herself to the Everneath. And easy to see why, after her Return, she would fight so hard to stay. Even though the Tunnels are coming for her no matter what. And oh, the end. Powerful. Heartbreaking. Totally the only way this could have ended. I can’t way to see where book two takes us.

Luke Bamford lukebamford — The plot was interesting, and kept my interest until the end. The foreshadowing was really subtle; I remember thinking early on: “Oh, something about that Mysterious Group is going to be what solves this Mysterious Happening that is central to the plot” and then completely forgetting about the Mysterious Group and being carried along by the story, until - ta-dah! - Mysterious Group pops up again, and lo, they do indeed partially explain the Mysterious Happening. I kept comparing it to other things (mostly LOTR and Stargate) but the comparisons weren’t in the vein of “look how this guy is ripping off episode 34!” but rather “it’s kind of like episode 34 where they do that thing, but not really.” Oh, so you want to know about the plot? Okay, here goes. Elantris is a magical city in the midst of a fairly normal world. The people who inhabit Elantris are super-human; they are smarter, stronger and faster than regular people and they look differently too, with white hair and glowing skin. But the Elantrians were originally regular people. They are transformed into Elantrians by an instantaneous process called the “Sheod” that strikes without warning, usually while the person is asleep. Elantris had been doing its magical-city-thing for a long while, then suddenly, the city stopped being magical. The Elantrians became crippled, pain-wracked beings who were a shadow of their former selves. And all the lands around fell into chaos. Ten years later, people are still being transformed, but it’s a terrible curse rather than a blessing. And when it happens to the beloved crown prince of the country of Arelon, then the story begins. The novel has a lot of fascinating plots. There’s the mystery (why did Elantris suddenly stop being so awesome?), and there’s political intrigue in the country of Arelon, some religious zealots who are trying to convert everybody, and a little bit of romance thrown in. But it’s not hard to keep straight, and it all ties up pretty neatly in the end, and not in that Deus Ex Machina so common in lesser stories. The one aspect about the book that I didn’t like was the languages. Sanderson came up with a lot of interesting names for places, people and magicks, but many of them are very similar sounding, and it’s easy to get confused, especially with the more minor characters. But this is really the only criticism that I can make. I can wholeheartedly recommend Elantris to you, especially if you like fantasy. Give it a try!
