Philippa Ballantine's Geist is the first in the books of the Order. Sorcha Faris is among the most powerful Actives in the Order. She receives her marching orders by the abt of the Order and is send on a mission to Ulrich, an isolated village. The mission is to come to the assistance of the Priory and deal with the surge of violent geist activity that is plaguing the village. Because her regular partner is out of commission she is thrust into a partnership with the young, but powerful Sensitive novice Merrick. Their trip to Ulrich is frought with danger with geists that are not acting normal. During their journey they are rescued by the pretender to the throne, Raed Rossin, bearer of a terrible curse. The party arrives at Ulrich unprepared for what awaits them there. And that is only the beginning... I loved Geist. This book had me sitting on the edge of my seat. It's full of action. The interaction between the main characters is wonderful and often very amusing. Ballantine really managed to build a believable world. The story is told from the perspective of the three main characters. Of the three I could relate the most to Sorcha and Raed. They are both more mature than the lovesick puppy Merrick, although he certainly pulls off some awesome magic and manages to hold his own against his imposing partner. Sorcha is tough, arrogant and at times appears unfeeling, but her heart is definitely in the right place. I really liked her! It's another great addition to the genre as far as I'm concerned. I'll definitely be buying Spectyr, the sequel to Geist, which was published this Summer.
