Philippa Ballantine's Geist is the first in the books of the Order. Sorcha Faris is among the most powerful Actives in the Order. She receives her marching orders by the abt of the Order and is send on a mission to Ulrich, an isolated village. The mission is to come to the assistance of the Priory and deal with the surge of violent geist activity that is plaguing the village. Because her regular partner is out of commission she is thrust into a partnership with the young, but powerful Sensitive novice Merrick. Their trip to Ulrich is frought with danger with geists that are not acting normal. During their journey they are rescued by the pretender to the throne, Raed Rossin, bearer of a terrible curse. The party arrives at Ulrich unprepared for what awaits them there. And that is only the beginning... I loved Geist. This book had me sitting on the edge of my seat. It's full of action. The interaction between the main characters is wonderful and often very amusing. Ballantine really managed to build a believable world. The story is told from the perspective of the three main characters. Of the three I could relate the most to Sorcha and Raed. They are both more mature than the lovesick puppy Merrick, although he certainly pulls off some awesome magic and manages to hold his own against his imposing partner. Sorcha is tough, arrogant and at times appears unfeeling, but her heart is definitely in the right place. I really liked her! It's another great addition to the genre as far as I'm concerned. I'll definitely be buying Spectyr, the sequel to Geist, which was published this Summer.

Thought this series was a trilogy, so I was anxious to find out the end. Alas, there's another book yet to come. I'm not sure I'll read it.

I quite enjoyed this, and I have since purchased her other work but haven't read them yet. I like her writing style and I think it will have strengthened with each book, so I'll probably pick up one of her books again soon. So many books, so little time...

Delightful, well-told account of the infamous Gardner Museum robbery of several famous paintings and lesser artifacts (as yet unrecovered) and the almost obsessive search for the culprits. The story is worthy of a good mystery novel, except the questions are left unanswered (although I am pretty convinced that Boser is correct in fingering David Turner). The author also delves into the broader world of museum security and art theft.
it's like a bunch of woody allen short films that you read instead of watch.

Completely adorable story about a small-town girl with small-town sensibilities that has to come to terms with her new temporarily-but-seems-like-forever live-in citified neighbors. Tween.

This is a good historical fiction set towards the end of the "War of the Roses" period of English history. It gives insight into the political and working lives of the silk merchants and the women it employed.

Not bad! Short, but you get enough story that it reads like a quick novel. The hero and heroine have somewhat vivid and extreme sexual fantasies about each other for the first part of the book, and it's a good way to delay satisfaction, create sexual tension, yet at the same time have explicit sex scenes early in an erotic romance. The source of conflict lies mostly in the fact that they're partners and co-workers so must maintain a proper working relationship and in that the hero has some very dark and dominant tendencies that he's afraid to unleash on any woman about whom he cares. And that's pretty much the gist of the whole book — I feel like I gave it all away somehow. Oh, spoiler: they get together in the end. Nicely done, though.

Edgy without being cutting or consciously provocative, Cate Marvin is a pleasure to read. I want to get my hands on her latest collection, but this was the only one available at the New York Public Library.
