Out of all YA novels that were released back in the year 2012, SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY was extremely high on my will-beg-for-this-book wishlist. I may not be a huge zombie fan, but something about this story called to me and drew my curiosity. Fortunately, Susan Dennard's writing and story didn't disappoint. Eleanor Fitt is a determined, take-charge kind of gal, which immediately made it so much easier to enjoy her narration. From the beginning, this story sets off in an excited rush that never seems to dissipate – instead, it builds and grows until the story reaches its conclusion. Filled with fun, flirting, explosions, adventure, action, a lovely historical setting, a healthy dose of steampunk, and some creepy zombies (aim for the knees!), Dennard skillfully weaves it all together and creates SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY – or, one fantastic story. HIGHLIGHTS: I'm still surprised by one aspect of Eleanor's conclusion*. The setting is wonderfully depicted. I really felt like I was stepping into another time, and I commend Dennard for writing the setting so wonderfully and realistically. Eleanor's spunk and determination is admirable, she's a protagonist worthy of rooting for. The romance was nicely done, even if I was initially concerned that Dennard would include a love triangle since it seemed to appear that things were going that way for a bit. But, it soon became very obvious that only one intriguing young man captured Eleanor's attention. Also, the Spirit-Hunters = Awesome. LOWLIGHTS: The villain of the story was incredibly easy to guess, right from the beginning. WAY too easy. Please give me a challenge next time, Dennard! Eleanor's mom was a bit frustrating, too. I wish the Spirit-Hunters had been in the story a bit more so I could learn more about them, but I assume there will be more of them in A DARKNESS STRANGE AND LOVELY. Şeyh Şamil - Ziya Şakir TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

Synopsis: The events of the book take place three months after those of Wicked Lovely, with the fallout from the events of Ink Exchange still simmering between our heroes. Aislinn is beginning to become accustomed to being Summer Queen, while Seth, her mortal boyfriend, is becoming increasingly bothered by her status. And the growing attraction between her and Keenan, the Summer King. A love triangle, however, is the least of their worries; Niall, the new Dark King has revenge on his mind and his heart set on war with the Summer Court. Donia, the Winter Queen, and Keenan's sometime lover, is also not too happy with Keenan. In other words, both the Winter Court and the Dark Court (who are natural allies) both have it out for the Summer Court. Oh, and Seth has ties to all three Courts...and he cannot be loyal to all three. Seth decides to take matters into his own hands, and his actions will change everything. My Review: I liked this better than Ink Exchange, but I don't think it's quite on par with Wicked Lovely. I am disappointed with the love triangle, especially, because it unfortunately goes against what Wicked Lovely set up. I don't want this to be Twilight with faeries, I was hoping it wouldn't come to this. Seth really got on my nerves in this book (actually, I think I wanted to punch all the main characters at least once)! I didn't think he was romantic at all, I thought he was selfish and manipulative. He becomes the "all or nothing" guy, and silently resents Aislinn while smiling to her face, which makes it even worse. Aislinn's character didn't fare much better with me. The love triangle made her wishy-washy where she once had strength and conviction. She was given nothing better to do than agonize over her feelings the entire book, rather than explore her new powers. The Seth/Aislinn thread was overwrought and extremely repetitive, mostly consisting of the two reminding themselves how much they loved each other and making lists of each others' lovable traits, as if they needed to convince themselves--and the reader--that they belong together. If it seems right, I don't need to be convinced. It also really bothered me that neither one believes they're anything without the other. Yikes! Maybe my problem is that I like Keenan. I'm not sure we're supposed to, but I do. The characters always go off on how manipulative and conniving he is, but I don't find him to be any more so than any other character. He does whatever he has to in order to benefit his kingdom, personal relationships be damned. Is this not what a king should do? So far, he is a good king, but at the cost of being an honest person. I like that! Lastly, the plot is left unresolved and cannot stand on its own the way the other two can. In essence, it's a lead-in to Book 4, which probably explains the relatively weak, rambling plot. Everything hangs on the next book, and for all the faults in this one, I'll still be there for the next.

Otuz Dokuz Basamak - John Buchan TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

Overall Let me start of with a warning: This book is written with a purpose, an agenda, and a message to get across. If you didn't know about all that from the name of the book or the blurb, then the Letter from the White House and the Introduction would give it away. If you somehow started reading without getting this point, then the amount of anti-bullying might surprise you, but really you have no one to blame but yourself. Aside from the obvious agenda and one story, which seemed weaker than the others, I have nothing but praise for this book. It's heartfelt, saddening, and hopeful. It made me want to make a difference in the world, or at least my part of it. It made me want to support my friends instead of teasing and mocking, which comes so easily. True, its messages read like an after-school special (but with better characters, plot, dialogue, and acting), but it's not trying to hide that. I'd recommend this to most everyone, but especially saps. Saps will love this. I should know. Blending In A sweet story about a closeted gay student who watches horrible bullying happen to a flamboyant gay student and learns how important it is to stand up against bullying. Short, meaningful, and beautifully done. It was touching. Chuckie This story feels unique because it takes the point of view of the bully and not the victim. It gives a good look into the head of the bully and what drives him, and also the potential for change. While the transformation happened quickly (obviously working within a limited space), it was well handled and believable. Saved While this story was heavily religious, I liked that it didn't use religious beliefs as the catalyst for the bullying. Instead, people were the cause, whether they came from an uber religious background or not. Another touching story of overcoming bigoted beliefs and of standing up for a person--and for yourself. Different While all stories of bullying are sad, this one was truly heartbreaking in its brutal honesty. It touches upon herd/peer dynamics and the fear of being "associated" with the outsider, no matter what that outsider is. The hardest part is almost everyone will know there was a time when they didn't stand up for someone who needed it. Invisible A touching story of a kid who is coping with being bullied--until it escalates to public humiliation. As he tries to "man up" and "tough it out," he really just wants to be left alone and stay invisible. To live his life. The character is so real--so like any other kid--that it makes his story all the more moving. The show of his strength and the necessity of an outside force to help him, is extremely telling of everyone. Shame Taken from the perspective of a mother, I didn't find this story as emotionally moving, but older readers--and readers with children--may be able to better relate. It was well done, even if you want to smack the mother around (which is the point). Kirby Poor Kirby. Fat and gay. But this story is nice because it really makes something other than sexuality the central focus of the bullying, although it's still important. Obviously obesity (which is a childhood epidemic now, according to experts) is a major issue, both for health and psychological reasons. While I encourage people to get fit, I think this story points out the important differences in getting fit because it's expected of you and getting fit because you want to. Being pressured into getting skinny isn't going to work, in most cases. It has to be something the person really wants. Requested this book for review. Be sure to check out my other reviews on my blog.
