Suzannah Michelle suzannahmichelle — It's hard to remember now what I really thought of the book since I just saw the movie yesterday. I did like it though and I think Kathryn Stockett did a nice job telling this story in a slightly different way. I felt the fear and anger and pure frustration of the characters. I'm not sure if we should feel good because it seems we've come so far or if we just want to feel that way. Some days I don't think we've come all that far, some days it feels like we still treat each other just as badly, we just call it different things.

Ryan J ryanjcarey — I have long been curious about Walpurgisnacht, the eve of May Day (Maitag in German) but there is little information available about it. It is much like Halloween if it was celebrated in spring. I was impressed, this book was surprisingly well researched for a New Age press book. The first portion gives us the history and origins of Walpurgisnacht, discusses witches in German folklore and holiday customs. The second part of the book has recipes, crafts and activities for the occasion. Many of them are simple & easy, including the materials needed, so it is quite family-friendly, as well as fun for adults who enjoy whimsy. All in all, Night of the Witches was fun & interesting, striking a good balance between background information & ideas for celebrating.

Igor Sousa _gor_ — There have been good and bad things said about this book, Cleopatra: A Life. It’s either dull or lush. I’d have to say it’s a little bit of both, but leaning more towards the good. At times it did read like a long winded history lesson while also trying to separate fact from fiction, but mostly I found it intriguing. This book was a must read for me because of my love for almost all things Cleopatra and ancient Egypt. However my fascination with Cleopatra is apparently based on myths, as I found out while reading this book. Stacy Schiff strips down the Egyptian Queen’s image giving us perhaps a more realistic and true view of her. It took me a while to read this book but it was an enlightening read and I’m still just as fascinated by both the woman and the legend of Cleopatra.
