Brilliant, beautiful, devastating. Another modern day classic that I will be keeping on my shelves for a re-read. Highly recommended.

One of the more interesting moments in the story was when Cincinnatus' mother (or someone pretending to be her) visits him in prison. She tells him about 'nonnons' which she had as a child - ugly warped objects that you held up to an ugly warped mirror so that their reflection then looked beautiful and like a recognizable object. This was an important theme. Throughout the story, Cincinnatus has a 'double' - another Cincinnatus who does/says what he really wants to while he does/says what he is supposed to. His double leaves the prison to go home, moves the bolted down table, and dances with the jailer, among other things. His crime is also interesting; he's accused of 'gnostical turpitude' which seems to me being too hungry for knowledge and seeking it out. I enjoyed this book and the length (short) was just right. It's interesting how Nabokov's alternate worlds (here and also in Ada) are only a little different from reality, or different in ways that most writers ignore. It's very subtle. Themes: reality, knowledge, doubleness, questioning things, dangers of celebrating irrationality

More an essay than a book, this is a great ~1999 view of the computer software world. Neal Stephenson is funny, well-informed, and SHOULD be understandable to the layman. I have the bonus of being a computer geek and it was still interesting (did I mention often snidely funny?)
This was a nice, entertaining piece of fluffy reading. Time travel, love, adventure - nothing too heavy here, but a fun, quick read for a summer afternoon.

Really enjoyed this book! A little (or a lot) gory, but still interesting. Couldn't put it down.

I found the writing unimpressive. You know how you read some books, and you feel like jotting down witty phrases or beautifully written passages that seem to jump off the page? Well, this book is the opposite of that. Nafisi's story is compelling, but the storytelling is unbelievably dull. I was especially surprised by this because, throughout the book, Nafisi claims to be a writer. Despite Nafisi's lackluster writing style, I did read the whole thing (finally!). The book provides a perspective on what life was like for educated women in Iran during the 1980s. Because of that, the book was marginally worthwhile to read. But only if you've got time & motivation (as I did) to read through pages and pages of uninspired writing.

Good book! I just haven't finished it because I'm absorbing the knowledge slowly...

The Heiress provides a fascinating glimpse into what has been called the Gilded Age in America. Warren has created two sisters, Esme and Jinx Price, and used them to illustrate the opulent lifestyle of the era’s most privileged citizens. Esme, the older sister, is forced by her family into an engagement to a man she does not love—or even like. Her sister, Jinx, is consumed with an envy that ultimately drives her into a life of deception. The Heiress is a well-researched novel that captures readers and transports them back to the early 1900’s. Filled with secrets and intrigue, as well as romance, The Heiress is the compelling first novel in the epic Daughters of Fortune series. Warren used the Biblical story of Jacob and Esau as her inspiration for this story. She’s done a superb job. The Heiress is a book to be read and savored.
