I just performed in this play and, despite all the time I spent with it, there are ideas that still allude me. it forces you to ask many questions.

It's a rough couple of days whenever I re-read this book: the book drags me over the pavement every time. I tend to turn to it when I'm already entering a state of either self-pity or self-loathing, and for the majority of the book it does nothing but heighten the mood. But I'm in love with the brilliant and bent characters that reside in this book, their existential struggles consume me for the time that I am within the pages. It's not so much a book that revels in the lowest points of humanity, but reveals the difficulties and perhaps even insurmountable obstacles for even the best of people. Is there redemption at the end? Yes, but muted one, a gritty one, but one that always seems to me more honest for its dimness. This book contains greatness. I've always said that the reason I can't love Catcher in the Rye is that I read Franny and Zooey first, and knew what Salinger could create.

It is definitely for matured readers. Certain details about the tortures are too intense that if you are not mature enough, you will regret that you have read this book. As part of the writing, the postmodernism way, the book is gripping you throughout the novel. The way it is written is good.

I'm actually surprised I didn't abandon this one. It was just too strange. I kept reading thinking I was eventually going to get into it. It did have some interesting points being the setting was in Calcutta. I am reading Modoc which takes place in the jungles of India. Quite the contrast.

2011 Newbery honor book. I think this book was really well done. Nothing was very in depth but the whole thing just had a nice flow to it. I've never considered the people that call the keys home or how they have been affected by different eras in history, so I found that aspect of this book very enlightening. I like how Holm was able to weave in actual people/places/events, and knowing that she has relatives from the keys lets the reader know that she has a vested interest in getting the details right. This isn't the kind of book that I would rave about, but it was a nice read and it is a good introduction to historical fiction.

Very violent, repetitive dialog, and depressing. I couldn't even finish the book. I think Cormac McCarthy has other better books, so I haven't given up on him yet.

The Almost Moon by Alice Sebold was a struggle for me to get through. I had a really hard time relating to the characters in the book. I really enjoyed Lovely Bones but found this one to be a bit out of my comfort zone and slightly disturbing.

I can see how this book wouldn't be some folks' cup of tea, but I absolutely loved it. It was dark and twisted and truly eerie at times, with a wonderful resolution. Yes, it's kind of predictable in parts, but what good fairy tale isn't? What I loved the most about it is how it's clearly a fairy tale from the very beginning -- even when the boy is in 1940's London, you can just tell that magical and frightening things are going to happen. Stories live to be told, and I'm so glad that this one was!
