I raced through it's 500+ pages without understanding what the hell was going on. I guess that's what Surrealism is supposed to do. Regardless of my comprehension of Murakami's work, I'm more than ready to read another of his books. I just wish I knew what the deal was with all those Freudian overtones, and the talking cats.

I'm into this book enough to keep reading it, but so far the 13-year-old daughter is an unconvincing character and the plot is highly predictible. Perhaps the subject matter simply doesn't appeal to me... not sure. Overall, I'm still reading the book (which bodes well for it) but I don't love the idea of reading it...

OK. I didn't finish this book. But I loved it! If you are a punctuation vigilante like me, you will find this hilarious. Truss writes with a very dry humor that would have me chuckling each time I picked it up. It's not exactly a page-turner, and I had a stack of novels that wasn't getting any shorter, so I finally gave up on this after a couple of months and sent it back to the library. I will probably go back to it sooner or later.

A true, modern story of the post-apocalyptic megalopolis. POWER The first section of this book disturbed me more than anything I can remember reading. The author takes us with him as he moves back to his birth city of Bombay, and we feel the disorientation and culture shock as he discoverers the ways it has been "ruined." I knew nothing about Bombay before reading this book, and the process of becoming acquainted with it through these chapters was often dizzying, sometimes stretched the limits of my belief, and more than once made me feel nauseous. Suketu sprinkles his narrative with the many names and phrases of the local cultures, sometimes with translations and sometimes without; this only adds to the feeling of being immersed in an increasingly alien and unknowable world. There are descriptions of poverty, torture, meaningless violence, bureaucratic nightmares, pervasive corruption and upside-down justice -- in short, every type of societal clusterfuck imaginable -- that carves a meandering path between farcical and horrifying. In these realms even the names we give to people and places are illusory, constantly shifting. In his straightforward recounting of many run-ins with the people and systems of his city, Suketu paints a picture of a world gone far beyond sanity yet somehow continuing according to its own tenuous rules.

Such a simple book, so simply written, but a good transformation to watch unfold in this girl as she gets over rape among other things. I like the format it is written in and the pase it has. If given a chance, it can help you look inside of yourself and get over some things you might be afraid to tackle.

Favorite Quotes He is different, and there will be many people you love who will be unhappy with you. You don’t want them to feel you’ve dishonored them. Yes, I know how it is. But life is short. A chance for great happiness doesn’t come along all that often.
