Sasha Cherian sashacherian — A true, modern story of the post-apocalyptic megalopolis. POWER The first section of this book disturbed me more than anything I can remember reading. The author takes us with him as he moves back to his birth city of Bombay, and we feel the disorientation and culture shock as he discoverers the ways it has been "ruined." I knew nothing about Bombay before reading this book, and the process of becoming acquainted with it through these chapters was often dizzying, sometimes stretched the limits of my belief, and more than once made me feel nauseous. Suketu sprinkles his narrative with the many names and phrases of the local cultures, sometimes with translations and sometimes without; this only adds to the feeling of being immersed in an increasingly alien and unknowable world. There are descriptions of poverty, torture, meaningless violence, bureaucratic nightmares, pervasive corruption and upside-down justice -- in short, every type of societal clusterfuck imaginable -- that carves a meandering path between farcical and horrifying. In these realms even the names we give to people and places are illusory, constantly shifting. In his straightforward recounting of many run-ins with the people and systems of his city, Suketu paints a picture of a world gone far beyond sanity yet somehow continuing according to its own tenuous rules.

Yulied Vargas _ul_argas — This book is only for those that just have to read the whole series. There are a few nice scenes that would be better as a short follow up novella type thing instead of this long winded write up of other peoples researched ice age period history wrapped around the life of Ayla. So much of the book is rehashing her past and will she won't she be a zelindonii ... The main thing that was irratating is we have all these bad guys out to be aylas enemy and NOTHING happens. Now I havnt read the last book yet..... But to make this big ole brick as a build up only is udder crap. Five books in and there's just nothing new. ...... Not too excited to read the 6th book but darnit after 20 years of reading these books - I have to!
