There's a lot in here, and while it suffers just a bit from being the 11th in the series, it's still filled with good, complicated intrigue, solid characterization, and lots of good twists and turns that are all set up nicely throughout what Harry finds out. It's solid but depends a lot on one knowing what's happened before to have it's full emotional impact.

It was disappointing for a number of reasons, namely the downgrade of Lyra's character from badass to Will's sidekick love interest (relatively speaking). The introduction of the little spy characters didn't do much for me, and I didn't care for the other world with Mary Malone at all. It straight-up did not interest me and there was too much of it. Mrs. Coulter's character development was not organic and did not ring true. The reenactment of the fall was good in theory but kind of dumb in execution. The journey through the underworld took too long to hold my interest. The priest assassin was built up and then discarded as an afterthought. The huge battle and the bomb scare were also anticlimactic. Stylistically, it seemed off compared to the previous two books, especially the dialogue, which was a bit more wordy, stiff, and formal than previously, and it was distracting. I like the conclusions Pullman came to, but the way he reached them was not good.

I really couldn't finish the book and I rarely have that problem. The characters were one dimensional and I could not connect with them on any level. the only bright part of the book that I did read was a scene between Lucan and Sam two characters from the Darkyn series.

Read for continuous hours without sleeping because this book--the story, the writing, the organization of details, it's importance in preserving a history that many remain ignorant of--is one of the best works of non fiction I've read.

I'm only going to review the last book of the series. I read this back in college, but I was utterly blown away. The best graphic novel series I've ever read. Sorry Watchmen fans. I can't wait to reread it someday soon.

Oh dear me I am so hooked! And I didn't realise until I was half way through that books 2 & 3 aren't published yet!!!! Argh!! But Patrick Rothfuss' blog is helping in the meantime! Love the character, love the intrigue. It's going to be a long & painful wait for the rest of the story.

Shamelessly reading it just in time for the movie

"It was amazing" might be a little bit strong, but these books are really enjoyable. Book II is even better than book one, the writing is crisper and funnier, the characters are better developed, and the author thankfully spends less time on the ridiculous horse series the protagonist likes to read. I've known people who have loved those kinds of series, and I'm just not buying that she's that type of girl. I don't know if I'm 100% invested in the mystery behind the children's birth, and its ties to their governess or the concept of "the hunt." It certainly isn't compelling me to learn more like the Series of Unfortunate Events did, but these books are fun and light and clever, and I highly recommend them as a palate cleanser between weightier works.

I loved this book… a lot more than I ever thought I would. The story is a series of letters from Screwtape, a senior demon, to his nephew Wormwood, a more junior "temptor." In each letter, Screwtape attempts to teach his nephew how to win his "patient's" soul over to the devil. In each chapter, Screwtape explains some aspect of the human condition that may be exploited by the temptor to win the patient over to hell. Screwtape explains the methods that God uses to protect Christians. What surprised me most -- what I enjoyed most -- was that, repeatedly, Screwtape described humans' free-will, intelligence, and rationality as some of the strongest assets that draw them to God and true Christianity. I have to say, that's a really nice switch from much of what I've seen or felt in recent years. Not necessarily in the church I attend, but in general, so much of the contemporary Christian message feels to me like an appeal to blind faith and raw emotionalism. That’s a message that feels intellectually empty and superficial to me. I loved a presentation that put freedom and rational thought in harmony with true Christianity. There's room for thought. There's room for doubt. There's room for true freedom. I think I especially liked the epiologue, "Screwtape Proposes a Toast." where Screwtape makes a distinction between true democracy and a popular, cultural type of thing that we call "democracy" that is really more about envy. Highly thought provoking.
