I read this long ago. The town she writes about is the town I used to live in in Texas. The name was changed to protect the guilty. But I know that bridge and I drove those roads. Her descriptions of the people and places and attitudes are spot on. I laughed at parts because these are personalities I have met and they are described perfectly, but then it isn't really funny because it isn't fiction.

"Books--all those big, heavy-bottomed ashcans where men empty their lives. I like the leopard. I don't like Benj. Franklin." This book starts off with some interestingly hallucinatory and surrealistic prose, but cannot maintain the necessary mixture of abstraction, alienation, and violence. Soon it devolves into bad gender relations and attacks on language and tradition, as per above or: "Man has been corrupted by his symbols. Language has killed his animal." &etc. There are interesting aspects and themes present, but none of them are ones that aren't done better elsewhere. Try Derrida, Proust, Camus.

Great vampire romance, better than the first one in the series. Christian is one of my favorite romance-novel males. He's confident and a bit bossy without doing any of that over-the-top male-dominance stuff. I didn't like Jolee that much at first, but she grew on me, and their love story was sweet and believable. It was also nice watching Christian attempt to redeem himself. I love Christian's blog and his 12-steps to becoming human program. This book was very funny at times: He definitely looked like someone who needed a fix. Especially when his shape-shifting ability failed him, and he changed from shadow into solid form with a bag of B negative hanging out of his mouth. That image totally cracked me up.

This novel started as a short-story. The characters and the landscape are so compelling. The main character, Alice Winston, is a lonely 12-year old girl living with her family in Desert Valley, Colorado. Her mother is clinically depressed and rarely leaves her room, her 16-year old sister eloped and her father is emotionally unavailable as he works to keep the family's ranch operating. The novel opens with, "Six months before Polly Cain drowned in the canal, my sister, Nona, ran off and married a cowboy." Horse lore plays a huge role and is used to explain and examine the subtleties and nuances of each character. The prose is flawless and Kyle literally transports her readers to the landscape of the west. The author is a recent graduate from the MFA program at Montana.

Great story written on the teenage reading level in which kids are whisked away to view differing cultural views on death.

In this book, Roald Dahl explores the power of dreams. Giants are the keepers of dreams, and they usually delight in tormenting children by sending them nightmares. Not the Big, Friendly Giant, though. He and Sophie have a magical adventure that includes the Queen of England. Good times.
