I couldn't finish this book, mainly due to the author's style of writing. The writing just seemed to flippant and nonchalant about the whole thing. What also didn't help was focusing briefly on one family or individual and then quickly jumping to another, then another. Maybe if the author had centered on one particular family or a small group of individuals...

This is an older book of Al Franken's and it provides a good look at many of the people who ran the country during the George W. Bush tenure. Some of it was really fuuny, some totally outrageous in terms of the mechanisms people employed to tell their lies, and some was simply not interesting such as the chapter on the college they visited. Penny returns to the tiny Quebec village of Three Pines in "A Trick of the Light", a village that doesn't appear on any maps and is populated by quirky, complex and fascinating characters. A murder once again brings Chief Inspector Gamache of Surete homicide and his detectives to town in the seventh book in this excellent series. The police have been to Three Pines often enough to know and even befriend some of the residents. I love going to Three Pines to visit these characters - the solving of the murder is almost secondary - an excuse to jump back into the ongoing lives of the detectives and the residents. (read these books in order to really get into their lives). The book before this one, "Bury Your Dead", was well-written but was primarily focused on a murder in Quebec City and I discovered that I felt a little cheated with the briefer storyline of events in Three Pines. "A Trick of the Light" is one of those books you close at the end with a satisfied sigh and hope that Louise Penny is writing as fast as she can.

My scanned copy (this library edition doesn't have Bianco and it's 44pg long; isbn:0385077483; I don't see a copyright date but process date of this book in the library stated 4/1/87) I read one of those Christmas toddler abridged board book version of this book a long time ago and found it to be a darling story. I wanted to see the original version so I checked this out from my local library. Sweet story. Oddly enough, I think I like the abridged version better (perhaps due to the illustrations ...brought out the visual mood). Anyway, I read this book to my kids last night and as soon as I finished reading, my eight year old stated that it was a good book and it was like the Pixar movie, "Toy Story". Very astute ... he just gave my review! There is something to companion toys. Although I didn't have one when I was young, I can appreciate the attachment kids have of them. At play, they do seem to be alive in the atmosphere of the kids' imagination. A tangible companion of their own. There must be something innate in us (maybe I should speak for myself) that give us a sense that toys are kinda alive. For example, when my kids step on or play rough with their stuff animals/dolls, I find myself wincing and end up scolding them to not treat their toys in such a matter. Perhaps it's more of teaching them proper behavior of respect. But, why did I wince? Did I think that the toy really got hurt or did my kids' behavior hurt me? I can't help but answer yes to both. ;) ***Find this review and more at Jinky is Reading

Okay, so... isn't this the same basic premise of Buffy? Meh.

The first 100 or so pages drew me in, but the ending was highly disappointing.

where to start...? well, of course i liked this. i mean come on, it's The Warden... it's not my favorite, but that's only because there's SO many loose ends that need to at least be started to be tied up... OF COURSE i'll wait IMpatiently for the next installment. ;) i would recommend this book only to loyal readers of the BDB... anyone else coming in trying to start with this book as the first would wonder why we are all such huge fans of JR Ward and this series... That being said, a day living in the world of the BDB is better than a day in the world of any other book... on that note, i'm not going to trash this book like so many other people have done in their reviews... i am just going to continue to be a fan and wait for the Qhuinn & Blay "novella". :)))

This was such a breathless page-turner for me that I stayed up all night to finish. It was so suspenseful and the plot so multi-layered, I was exhausted trying to keep up but in a very good way. I was absorbed and exhilarated through every twist and turn.
