The structure: the chapters toggle back and forth between a fifteen year old runaway and an eighty some year old man. The story lines interlock--a great source of tension. Murakami's fascination with US pop culture, especially its music, is a regular feature in the three books of his I've read. I experienced a certain ironic disappointment when I began reading Murakami--reading a Japanese author who had an equal or better command of US pop culture than I did. I got over it. I don't know classical European music enough to determine if his treatments of classical composers by different characters(a Japanese truck driver's fascination with Bach for instance) carry any weight beyond Murakami demonstrating his familiarity with the same. Even though Tolstoy insisted that if you introduce a pistol into the play, someone has to get shot, I'm not sure Murakami's musings on Hegel, Brahms and Bach by his various characters, constitute good shooting. But I read this book in one day. I obviously enjoyed it. The boy can flat-out structure a story. I'm reading a translation. Either the translator's very good at conveying Japanese vernacular speech into its US parallel, or Murakami's is very adept at conveying parallel impulses in US and Japanese culture. I don't know the latter at all. I just like Murakami's twisted sensibilities.

Twilight was probably the most amazing book I have ever read when it comes to pure romance and defining love. Unfortuantly the movies don't give it justice, so I wont even get on that subject. I fell for Edward because of the whole mysterious lure of what he is and the fact that he is so protective over Bella and would do anything and everything for her. I like Bella's forwardness of wanting to figure Edward out and get to the bottom of his fishiness. One of my top favorites. :)

Began originally June 28, 2008; abandoned July 3, 2008. I began this book in 2008, and abandoned it. My head was not in the book at the time, and it was just too much of a slog. In fact, I purposely left the book in my hotel room, because I was not enjoying it. In 2014, after enjoying other books by the same author, I decided to give What a Girl Wants another try. I am so glad I did. The book was very good and am I happy I read it. I agree with some other reviews that Ashley is a bit shallow, and far too judgmental, but I think she is a real character, she is a real person, and one that I would not mind having dinner with (with or without a coupon). I am looking forward to the rest of the series. A couple of notes completely unrelated to the story of the book. I started out reading a mass-market paperback edition of the book, but finally finished the Kindle edition. The author/publisher should really have someone thoroughly proofread the Kindle edition text. There were MANY glaring grammatical errors in the books, and many more typos that slipped past. Usually I can overlook them, but there were so many it was really getting to be a game for me to find them all. That is not a criticism of the book or the author, but more of the publisher. I hope there is soon an update of the book for all those who have not read it yet.

A beautifully written and accessible history of not just the dead white guys and gals of the English Isles. Schama has had some criticism because he made a deal with the devil (ie. the BBC and the History Channel) and these histories were made into high quality historical television. This book may not offer the most stringent critique of British history (though, it is not bad ... not bad at all) but it does tell a wonderful story and manages to elevate the discussion out of total myth, all-the-while managing to keep the history accessible and meaningful. I personally can't wait to read the next two volumes (and see the BBC broadcast)!

I almost stopped reading this book about 20% in since I was so confused. Thankfully, I continued. Confusion turned to a wonderfully complex tale. Atwood is one of those writers that makes you want to read many of the sentences several times to try to remember them.

Unlike Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austen is actually funny and her dry but amusing narration makes Pride and Prejudice much more fun than Jane Eyre. Elizabeth Bennett is actually interesting, and her love interest Darcy (don't act like I gave the plot away there; we all know how it ends) is still likeable despite being snotty and emo most of the time. Overall, pretty entertaining. Read for: 12th grade AP English
