a good fast read. Fun to have around for a beach weekend or sometime when you want a slightly rediculous tale spun for you. The dialogue is not as Allende's best, but the swashbuckling story mostly makes up for it.

I had only one train of thought going through my head when I finished this book "WHAT A SELF CENTERED EGOTISTICAL JERK? HOW COULD HE DO THAT? WHY? WHY WHY WHY? I'M SERIOUSLY GOING TO KILL THE @#$!@$*)!!! IF I SO BADLY DIDN'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT I WOULD BOYCOTT THIS SERIES! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH" Having given myself a few days to calm down... well. That hasn't changed much. But I'm in a better position now to rave about the amaznigness of this book. I mean, love as a disease? Can you imagine? On an awesomeness scale of one to ten... it exceeds the scale. That concept is absolutely AMAZING! And what's more, the writing doesn't ruin the concept *cough*Firelight and Matched*cough*. In fact, the writing was exquisite. Seriously. Words can't describe- you just have to read it. The characters. The change that they went through in the book was believeable and wonderful. Not to mention the fact that they had actual personalities! SHOCK HORRORR! I also loved some of the side charcters, Gracie in particular. I also loved Lena and Alex as a couple. They just complemented each other perfectly. Definitely my favourite of the dystopian genre so far!!!! (excluding Hunger Games, of course. No one can outshine Gale for me... Sorry) Just.... That ending...

What a kick-in-the-throat storytelling. The story is very illustrative of Afghanistan's weary and violent near history. Mr. Husseini tells us the story of two women and their struggles for life in a society that turns to think they should not live, revealing the ironic and obvious struggle between valuing women as life givers while depleting their worth because they are not men!! Khaled tells these women's story and leaves the reader to wince, tear up and sigh; many times I had to catch my breath and close the book as I couldn’t tolerate to read more at the moment. . . . Mariam is a poor, uneducated woman who had to endure the hardships of life. While, Laila is an educated girl who had to suffer the horrors and terrors witnessing the ugliness of war, the fate of loved ones, and grieving for lost lives. Mariam and Laila going through all kinds of physical abuse of hitting, kicking and slapping, brutal beating, etc…. Struggling the cruel extremely sadistic husband, Rasheed, and suffering all kinds of violence and subjected to his shifting mood and volatile temper. And sadly this is not exclusive to Afghan society; it is happening in many other countries: the unhappy, abusive marriages, oppressive governments and repressive cultural mores. It finds its echo in varying forms, in differing degrees, through the different time periods, across the world. The end of the novel gives some hope in its last scene after all the violent accidents, with Laila's pregnancy, Kabul rebuilding, and a loving family reunion. I really enjoy Mr. Housseini’s transportive narration. (Some parts of my review are copied from other readers’ reviews. . .)

While I loved the book, I just found certain characters frustrating. I guess everything can't always be roses, and it's not like I know what it's like to live in the 19th century, but I just wanted to scream "Get a damn spine!" Guess it just makes me appreciate my ability to have a voice really.

So good. And so sad I had to hide the book like I used to do with scary novels for fear it would somehow spill over into reality. Having read The Egyptologist, I am also awed by Phillip's ability to write so well in such different genres.

Less self consiously depressing than Hemingway's more famous, more histrionic writing, it still manages to be a very sad little book on nostalgia and life's missed opportunities. Worth reading for the descriptions of the wacky Fitzgerald and the insufferable Ford Maddox Ford.
i liked this book...quick read...thoughtful story...appeals to your sentimental side....includes an explanation of an interesting logic problem.

Interesting twist on a rather morbid and disturbing situation. Seeing it all through the narrator's eyes made it quite bearable and enjoyable.
