I learned that you should not steal. Stealing is not the solution. You have to talk about it. Thats the solution.

a rather disturbing little novel that succeeds at spinning an absorbing, multi-dimensional storyline from some discreet but very unusual happenings in 19th-cen. france. turns loosely on a biography which the protagonist is composing about 15th-cen. child-killer gilles de rais, 'the wickedest man who ever lived'.

Although this novel holds its own and is an enjoyable book, I feel that Pride & Prejudice is its superior in pace, story line and characters.

Interesting story of the revolutionary war told from a loyalest perspective.

I really enjoyed All the King's Men - once I got into it. Robert Penn Warren's gift of writing exceptionally beautiful phrases and passages, and drawing characters that seem to be alive, they are so faceted, was abundently clear throughout the book. I found myself placing tiny dogears on several pages because there were passages and quotes there that I absolutely wanted to remember, and I went through days when I just couldn't put the book down, I was so engrossed in it. My only complaint was that there were ten chapters in a 438-page book, which meant that chapters lasted almost 50 pages. When I start reading I like to be able to stop at a clear stopping point, and that made it hard to just pick up All the King's Men for ten minutes while I waited for dinner to finish cooking or five minutes while I waited to meet my husband after work. I get a lot of reading done in snatches like that, and my inability to read All the King's Men that way was what caused me to take months to finish it. When you read All the King's Men you do need to focus on it, or so much of the beauty of the language and the emotion expressed by the characters will be lost on you. I finally finished it after putting in several hours on the couch with it, and that was the only way to do it - sinking deep into Jack Burden's world and committing to go along for the ride.

I go back and forth on Ian McEwan but this was definitely not one of my favorites, it felt like a failed attempt to be the British Jonathan Franzen. I think I prefer his books that are more historical. Also, the whole physics thing was a bit over my head and a more solid knowledge then my "Physics in the Modern World" class in college probably would have helped. It's interesting to see how topics of global warming are entering into contemporary literature but I can't say say it was wholly successful.
Disappointing ending.

Recommended by Mary...really endearing characters, great character development. My French wasn't great enough ot understand everything when the 1940's slang of the author kicked in, but you just kind of have to get through that.
