I have to admit it took me awhile to get into this book - Joseph Heller has a style unlike any other author I've encountered. The build-up to getting invested in the characters takes some time, and, for me at least, finally grasping the totality of Heller's satirical, sarcastic, and ironic humor was a process. However, once I got into the swing of things and just took the book for what it was, I found myself laughing out loud - often. Despite the humor, which is darkly funny, the book also manages to address serious issues of human nature. Madness is a theme throughout the novel, juxtaposed with the absurdity of human nature: that which we all regard as sane, but at closer inspection, becomes ridiculous. You can't help but like Yossarian, the protagonist (or antagonist, if you will), and I look forward to getting more of him in the sequel. I can understand why there are reviews where people quit reading, or couldn't get into it. This book does require an investment - but then again, don't many of the classics? This book's humor may not be as readily accessible and quickly delivered as one might find in a David Sedaris book, but it's also not meant to read that one. One has to become immersed in the world Heller is presenting, understand his subtle humor, and, ultimately, realize that there are much deeper implications in this novel than one might find on the surface. If you're struggling to connect, push past it - this one is worth it. A very satisfying read.

I was very impressed with this book. I loved Patch and the fact that he wanted to be friends with the birds and learn to talk to them and that idea helped him help the rest of the squirrels. I was drawn into this story and had a hard time leaving it when I needed to. Great book!

Amazing book, and a satisfying, dense read. I think that this book's true strength lies in the author's vivid description of scene - you get to know the places and people in the book so well that you truly feel as though you are living the story along with them. I felt as though I intimately knew what the various places in the novel looked, felt, smelled like... and that I knew the people in the book well enough that their reactions to the various events in the book were believable. Because you learn about the pieces of the plot as the characters themselves do, you do really feel as though you're living right there alongside them. This is why I found the witches, vampires and daemons completely believable - I wasn't just thrust into a make-believe world and asked to suspend reality, but rather had it unfurl before my eyes through the experiences of the characters. There's lots of drama and suspense as the story unfolds, but also a lot of humour - the characters have a lot to deal with, but I never felt like they were in over their heads - no "woe is me" here - and the supporting cast is wonderful (including a haunted house with its own personality.) I am waiting with bated breath for the next book in this series.
