It kind of breaks my heart to leave a book series unfinished, but I just couldn't get through this novel. I don't know what it was that just made me fling the book into a corner and say I can't do it anymore. I have no idea why I got so annoyed with this book. Maybe it's because for the past couple of books, the story has just been meandering, maybe it's because there are too many one-dimensional characters to keep track of, maybe I just lost interest in the plot. Whatever it is, one thing I know for sure: I will not be buying any subsequent books in this series. It had promise initially, but now, I really think it's quite hopeless.

Tucker Jones tuckerjones — I have to admit it took me awhile to get into this book - Joseph Heller has a style unlike any other author I've encountered. The build-up to getting invested in the characters takes some time, and, for me at least, finally grasping the totality of Heller's satirical, sarcastic, and ironic humor was a process. However, once I got into the swing of things and just took the book for what it was, I found myself laughing out loud - often. Despite the humor, which is darkly funny, the book also manages to address serious issues of human nature. Madness is a theme throughout the novel, juxtaposed with the absurdity of human nature: that which we all regard as sane, but at closer inspection, becomes ridiculous. You can't help but like Yossarian, the protagonist (or antagonist, if you will), and I look forward to getting more of him in the sequel. I can understand why there are reviews where people quit reading, or couldn't get into it. This book does require an investment - but then again, don't many of the classics? This book's humor may not be as readily accessible and quickly delivered as one might find in a David Sedaris book, but it's also not meant to read that one. One has to become immersed in the world Heller is presenting, understand his subtle humor, and, ultimately, realize that there are much deeper implications in this novel than one might find on the surface. If you're struggling to connect, push past it - this one is worth it. A very satisfying read.
