This book took me a long time to read, but it was worth it. Gittel lives in the totally insular Chassidic Jewish community of Borough Park, NY, in present day, and the narrative jumps back and forth between today and eight years ago, when Gittel had a best friend, Devory. As the story unfolds, you see the warmth and closeness of the community, but also the fact that teen Gittel is haunted by the ghost of Devory and something awful that happened when they were children. In keeping with ancient rules, Gittel and Devory never had TV, internet, non-Jewish books, co-ed classes, or sex education. They helped their mothers do the work of homekeeping, child-rearing, and income-earning so the men of the community could study Torah full-time. And they both prepared to step into their own arranged marriages upon high school graduation. I'll be honest in saying that I was amazed that this book took place in present-day New York. I knew little to nothing about ultra-Orthodox Chassidics and how strictly and insularly they live, even today. At times, Gittel's ignorance of the world is almost comical. The author has taken "Eishes Chayil" (Woman of Valor) as a pseudonym, since she herself was raised in this community. Occasionally she does too much telling and not enough showing -- whole chapters feel like they lack dialogue -- but if you plow through, you get a full sense of the ingrained traditions and laws that make for such a strong community fabric as well as allow such a deep denial of things like sexual abuse. I cried at the end, and I'll be thinking about this one for a long, long time. Includes a Glossary of pronunciations and meanings of Yiddish words, which is very illuminating. Would be interesting paired with The Chosen One, by Carol Lynch Williams. Both are ripe for discussion. Favorite quote: "We built walls, and built them high. The walls would keep the gentiles and their terrifying world far away. The walls would protect us and shelter us -- and as we built them higher, thicker, wider, we forgot to look inside. We forgot that the greatest enemies always grow from within." --from the Author's Note
