I enjoyed the scenery and enjoyed the everyday life of Americans raising a child in Paris. The stark contrast of American culture vs. French culture was surprising. some humor.....history of Parisian culture was a little much for me @ times.

All things considered, this is a solid paranormal thriller. Yes, it dragged quite a bit, but I feel that the story just started to cook with some grease right at the very end. If I want to get fancy with analogies, I’d say this book is the literary equivalent of a Dave Mathews CD. It’s good quality stuff, but I’m not counting down the days until the next album drops. Sure, I own a Dave Mathews CD, but I don’t have it stored in my favorite playlist – and I certainly don’t know all the lyrics by heart. Anne Rice’s vampire books, however, are right on par with my Dixie Chicks obsession! Go to my blog, Chick Lit Cafe, for the full review: http://loonachicklit.wordpress.com/20...

Finished the book yesterday but forgot to post my goodreads comment. I thought it was an average book.I would recommend this book for anyone who likes romantic novels. This book was mainly about two girls struggles in 18th century venice, italy, while the war was going on. The two main characters grow up together in an orphanage and both girls marry. But the two families they wed into are mortal enemies. throughout the book the girls make an effort to see each other. then later in the book one of the girls has an affair with a man from florence. the husband had no idea about the affair. then even later in the book, the other husband is framed and put in prison by the other girl's husband. then the two girls band together to rescue him out of prison. i cant say how because that would give away the ending. the culture is different from american culture because italian culture is mainly opera, architecture, and music and pasta as their signature dish. where as american culture is a mix of all cultures from all different backgrounds. i think the reason the author wrote this was to show the hardships of two women in 18th century italy and how they overcame that, even with a war going on. the theme of the text is that anyone can overcome hardships or trials even in the worst of times.

The translator is a UT professor, who is a pretty big deal in the Germanic studies. Nathan recommended this book, I read it on a lark, and have been forever haunted by the imaginative narrative, the bold and whimsical plot lines. My favorite story if about the guy who sees the same people everyone, on the bus, in the streets, but he doesn't know them. He's not paranoid, they are the same people he can't shake. It's so funny and odd to think of having your own set of familiar strangers.

We have had these books in our home for years - my children loved them when they were small and still do. I had never read them until the past few months. Excellent read - well written. The new Prince Caspian movie is what prompted me to read them.

I should preface this by saying that I didn't read book 1 because the reviews were terrible. I decided to give this one a shot and the learning curve was a bit steep considering that the reader was expected to know all these characters from the get-go. But after I got into it, the novel was so much fun. Enthralling really. very interesting concepts, with a little political intrigue thrown in. Looking forward to book 3, because I doubt we've seen the last of Raul or Stephenson.

Finally, I got around to reading this "classic". I've had experience with other Steinbeck novels. (Favourite being Of Mice and Men). But, everyone acknowledged that this was his magnum opus. And, maybe that is the case. However, I still believe Of Mice and Men to be the better novel (even though it is extremely short). I was prepared for all the symbolism, and recreation of the Cain and Abel story. And, this is most likely what took away from the originality I was expecting. That being said, this is a fantastic book. Even only for the comic relief of Lee, Adam's chinese manservant. And, also, some of the quotes from the novel stick with you for a while afterwards. I could only give this novel 4 stars (but, a well-deserved 4 stars). Maybe in the future I will re-read this story and find other missing treasures. But, for now, I'll stick with Of Mice and Men.

3.5 stars. Sophisticate walks around NYC with side visits to Nigeria and Belgium, meditating eruditely on his surroundings. Reminiscent of Netherland but with less invention, action, and/or characterization.

many people reading this book would see the problems with the food industry as a whole as the heart of this book. a quote was once written about this book to the effect of "a book meant to hit the people's hearts not their stomache". sinclair is very poignant in his book about the struggle of the immigrant coming to this country. these were immigrants who wanted to be Americans: learn the language, the culture, to be patriotic. However, they were treated to abysmal conditions and a life with very little hope of succeeding.
