I had a gorgeously illustrated version of this story when I was growing up. I hated it. In its own small way, it was kind of tragic. I grew to appreciate it as I got older, though. It kind of makes me feel better about all the student debt my boyfriend and I have between us.

this is a terrible book, I can't believe I read it. it has the most ridiculous plot line, and the most misleading title I have ever seen - Boyd chose to call the book 'Stars and Bars', before going on to describe one guy going into the large home of a very eccentric family and having some over the top adventures. absolutely nothing to do with stars or bars. henry

I loved every second I spent reading Divergent. Its quick, fluid pacing, combined with edge of your seat plotting and heart rending characters, lent itself well to this dystopian debut. Divergent takes place in a Dystopian Chicago. It has long been discovered that the cause for the worlds’ strife and political unrest wasn’t due to race or religion but rather the personality traits of human beings. Thus a new government was formed and divided into factions that were created according to those virtues that leaders found to be the most prudent. Those of Dauntless value bravery and live a life dedicated to service through valor. Erudite values knowledge and are a faction devoted to studies. Amity values love and happiness, Candor – Honesty and Abnegation values selflessness above all else, thus making them best suited for leadership roles in government as they are uncorrupt able. At the eve of the choosing ceremony, the event in which young adults choose the faction in which they will live, we meet Tris Prior. Tris is a 16 year old girl that has grown up in Abnegation, but has found the factions ideals difficult to live by. She often feels out of step and ponders what it would be like to live a life afforded by other factions. However doing so would mean betraying her family. While her upcoming aptitude test could support what she has always known, that she doesn’t belong in Abnegation, she also fears what the results with say. But when her results come back inconclusive, Tris must make her choice without a guide. Tris’s choice and the consequences that follow kept me turning the pages into the wee hours of the night. I simply couldn’t find a stopping point! Tris was a character that I could root for and the world that Roth has created is intricate and entrancing. I can’t wait to see what happens in the sequel. Side note: I’m normally peeved to read books that are the start of a trilogy, but at nearly 500 pages, Roth gives plenty of meat to her story to keep readers satisfied.

A wonderful novel linking the reclusive poet Emily Dickenson with the fictional Miranda Chase. Well written and researched and presented many of Emily's poems throughout the story. I have always enjoyed her poetry but now I would like to know more. Also, interweaved in the story of Miranda is love, loss (Civil War), women's rights, and educational reform. Miranda was passionate about teaching to the individual student and making learning appealing, something we say but don't often follow through. This is a challenging and powerful novel on many levels.

Powerful stuff. I continue to believe good historical fiction can often make history more accessible than other history books, biography, or memoir. I cried at the end. I particularly liked the timing of the events in the book. It is an effective surprise when you think you're still in exposition, but suddenly the characters are confronted with the Holocaust. The small tragedy of that timing helps drive the suffering home as much as the more blatant killing and cruelty. In also liked the theme of remembering with the mystical plot device. Good book.

A really cool mix of a bladerunner-type noir detective story and jack bauer-style asskicking. The premise is that people have discovered how to store the information in your brain on a computer chip, so that when you die you can just remove the chip and put it into a new body and keep going like nothing happened. I thought the basic idea was really interesting and the fact that the main character was a tremendous badass made it a lot of fun to read.

This is the second book about the FLDS cult that I read in the past year. While I found the reading to be elementary at times, I do believe reading about these women has helped me to understand better the plight of any woman caught in brainwashing and bondage. How does one begin to realize that she has been brainwashed? And once she begins to see beyond her entrapment, how does she get out from under it? I have high respect for the women who have left and who have made it. Clearly many return to the abuse because they fear the outside world or because they have no resources once they leave.

Harika bir anı. Güney Bronx sokaklarında, silahların yayılmasından önce ve sonra davranış kuralları. Komik, dokunaklı, üzgün ...
