This book reminded my why I love singing, and is inspiring. If you are a singer you will relate to many things in the book.

Excellent book concentrating on one small but horrific battle on the wild unchartered island of New Guinea in World War II. I listened to the audiobook which was narrated beautifully.

I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THIS WAS PART OF A SERIES UNTIL COURTZ TOLD ME. Now I have a crazy craving for the others. Are they all as tacky and yet WONDERFUL?

It's obvious why it's a classic American novel. Not the best piece of literature ever written, but an incredible cultural artifact/morality play. A response, equally polarized, to the Horatio Alger school of pulling oneself up by one's bootstraps. Furthermore, how people took "our meat is dirty" to be the main message of this book is a great testament to the blind stupidity that mass hysteria is able to foster. This book isn't about meat. It's about human suffering.

Well, I knew getting into the book that I would probably be a little upset by the main event in the beginning, but I tried not to let that get in the way of me reading the book. I love dogs, I even walk a few that aren't mine for spare money. I was pretty happy to discover that this really isn't a mystery about trying to find a dog's killer, but really the mystery of life as seen through the eyes of an autistic boy. I don't want to give anything away, as this is a beautiful story that should be discovered by yourself, but I really appreciated this book. I really felt the anxiety Christopher felt when he was out of his element. I actually liked all the little diagrams, and it seemed the more math puzzles there were, the more conflict he was feeling. It was a great way to illustrate his anxiety. This book made me appreciate the order he was able to find in chaos, and how he used this order to get through the main bit of the story (which is a challenging event for anyone).

Not much of a romance genre fan so I've avoided Nora Roberts. With her writing as J.D. Robb I thought I'd give the In Death series a try, for the mystery element. (which also has a romance.) I want to say it has a typical romance plot...you know "woman at odds with man", "they get on each other's nerves", "send each other stinging barbs", "misunderstand each other's signals"...oh look they fell into bed somehow! I have to say that this element was there, but hardly typical. Robb has a way of bringing ... not sexual images ... but sensual ones. Whew! Someone bring me a Mint Julep!

Keep in mind, I apparently read the "short version". I didn't know that there were two different lengths until after I read it, and I plan on reading the longer version later on. Until then though, this book is amazing. Like other classic french novels I've read, it's a slow start. But once you get to a certain place, you just want to know more and more and more and more...you get the picture. The characters were surprisingly interesting. When I hear that a story is "a classic tale of insert genre", I don't expect too much in the way of characterization (unless that's part of the description). However, I got into these characters and their struggles. I really wanted the good guys to survive and win, and those jerks who caused all this pain and suffering. One point for Dumas. Morally, there's no swearing as far as I can recall, but there is some violence and death. However, it's not really discussed in great detail so those who are squeamish have nothing to worry about. Then again, I read the shorter version, so who knows. Good: Classic tale of revenge, characters, descriptions, and this is only the short version! Bad: Takes a bit to build up. There is no excuse for anyone to not read any version of this book. I can't wait to read the longer version! EDIT: Read the full version, and it's even better and more indepth :D!

** spoiler alert ** I really donæt know what to say about this book. It is not something I would choose to read, and it was just full of hopelessness. And there was just no brightness in sight. Though the end was extremely sad I didnæt get it either. Who was the man and the woman? How did they susstain themselves and their children? How could they keep on living and I... I don't know. Just didn't get the point of the book. Maybe I need to be a deeper reader. There was an immage in the book that I will never get out of my head and I wish it wasn't there. I would be better of not having read it.... I think....

I really enjoyed this book! I've read it a couple of times, and I've recommended it to countless people. It's certainly not for everyone...I think one needs an appreciation for religion and spirituality-and more importantly the ability to find humor in religion and spirituality. This book is hilarious!!! What surprised me most was that in the midst of laughing until I cried, I was actually touched and inspired by this mostly farcical book. I like to think that this is what Jesus was really like. I think Jesus would give this book 5 stars as well! =)

I couldn't wait to read this, since the second book in the series leaves you hanging. I would have liked better editing of the frivolous political backdrop, but all in all, the story was great. Too bad this author met an untimely death--he was a real story teller.
