Overall, I liked it. The character development was strong and I felt invested in the plight of the main characters. The end of the story left the reader waiting and ready to read the next book to find out what will happen next. Oftentimes, authors will rely on historical events to move their plot along and this book doesn't do that, nor does it need to. Having said that, I do not understand why this book, the first of a trilogy mind you, was almost 600 pages long! There was a lot of build-up in the first 250-300 pages (slow moving to say the least) and then the pace quickened, almost as if Ms. Harkness' editor said "move it along and get to your point." Perhaps Ms. Harkness or her editor could have cut some of the extraneous descriptions from the first 300 pages. Especially when avid readers "got it" long before the characters did. I am concerned by the sheer volume of loose ends that were left hanging. Will they really be tied up into a neat package for the reader by the close of the series? Also, there were so many unanswered questions that the book cannot be read as a standalone book - very frustrating! Although I am looking forward to the next book, I am not looking forward to another thick book. Deborah, you are not Margaret Mitchell and this is not Gone With the Wind!

Sometimes CS Lewis books are a little out there for me, but I really enjoyed this one. It is his vision of what heaven is going to be like. You go to heaven as a ghost, and you then get the chance to rid yourself of the sins that you carried with you when you died. It's really fascinating. I think this one would be fun to discuss with others. My best friend and I read it together, and we really enjoyed talking about it. It's pretty amazing how CS Lewis's beliefs parallel that of our church doctrine.

This is just as good, if not better than These is My Words. These is My Words had a complete resolution ending. It didn't end for me like there would be a sequel. So much happened to Sarah and her family in the story that I couldn't imagine any more adventure or heartbreak than already witnessed by them. But the author just kicked it up a notch.

This book was just ok. I picked it up thinking it would have more historical data about NY City at the turn of the century than it did. It was more a history of the Tiffany Glass Company and how the pieces were made. I found myself skipping over the design passages. To an artist, these may be more interesting.

This book shows the beauty and compassion of the early works of Mockbee's Rural Studio -- it is compelling to read and peruse, but after visiting the projects and seeing them in their surroundings, I was disappointed to see the context "cleaned away" for the book. It's important to know what's around these works, and how they're really used; the book glosses over them.

Another in the vein of Mysterious Benedict Society... meets X-men... meets Savvy... meets The Wizard of Oz. Kids who have special talents sure don't get a break. I liked this book. The first few chapters seemingly have very little to do with the rest of the book. The perspective skips around all over the place; sometimes we're focused solely on Piper McCloud (aka, the Girl Who Could Fly) while at other moments, we're focused on the supporting characters. Actually, at one point, Piper disappears for a good amount of time, and the author just glosses over that. I don't quite believe all of the motivations of the characters. Abnormal personal growth seems to go hand in hand with an abnormal skill set. The conclusion seemed hastily added on with fairy tale endings to many of the storylines. A lot was left unexplained, priming the audience for... a sequel? Of course. Uneven, but entertaining. Kids will like it, I think. I enjoyed reading, but after any kind of analysis, the gaping holes become bothersome.

Read it in a day. It was just as amazing as Hunger Games, and just as unsuitable for the faint of heart and weak of stomach. Will write more when I've slept on it.

I very much enjoyed Jane's sarcastic sense of humor, it totally made this book. Also it's nice to know that I'm not the only one that can't stand mis-shelved out of order books...and must fix them for my sanity.

Once again Bohjalian's writing is riveting plus I always love a good Historical fiction selection.
