赵 嘉瑞 _hao_ia_ui — Overall, I liked it. The character development was strong and I felt invested in the plight of the main characters. The end of the story left the reader waiting and ready to read the next book to find out what will happen next. Oftentimes, authors will rely on historical events to move their plot along and this book doesn't do that, nor does it need to. Having said that, I do not understand why this book, the first of a trilogy mind you, was almost 600 pages long! There was a lot of build-up in the first 250-300 pages (slow moving to say the least) and then the pace quickened, almost as if Ms. Harkness' editor said "move it along and get to your point." Perhaps Ms. Harkness or her editor could have cut some of the extraneous descriptions from the first 300 pages. Especially when avid readers "got it" long before the characters did. I am concerned by the sheer volume of loose ends that were left hanging. Will they really be tied up into a neat package for the reader by the close of the series? Also, there were so many unanswered questions that the book cannot be read as a standalone book - very frustrating! Although I am looking forward to the next book, I am not looking forward to another thick book. Deborah, you are not Margaret Mitchell and this is not Gone With the Wind!

Matthew Kinbaum _atthew_inbaum — I am attempting to read as much as I can about Hearst so that I am able to argue with the tour guides at Hearst Castle about why he wasn't really all that great a guy. The first book I read, The Chief, focused on the man himself, and it was written fairly recently. This book, on the other hand, was published in 1981, and it focuses on the Hearst empire after WR died. Informative, but lacks the glamour of WR's life. And, as with any book on the Hearsts, the authors were not completely objective, so it must be read with that in mind.
