Would have gotten 5 stars if it hadn't left me in such a bad mood, although the impact it has on the reader is outstanding. A collection of short stories about unpleasant people and even more unpleasant situations, that's the best way to describe it. O'Connor wrote with the bitterness and derisive humor of an embittered female stand-up comic, but managed to somehow eke out a small space in each tale for seriousness. Or at least make one feel the weight of what was at stake. Thanks to Rachel for the book!

This is really a shapeshifter romance cause for the first time, both in M/M than in F/M romance, I have read of the problems and fears a normal man could have to deal with a supernatural lover. Martin is a quite and clever man, openly gay and he is still recovering from the betrayal of his last lover, a seeming on the closet gay, and really a bisexual man who has used Martin as his mistress behind his wife. So Martin has agreed to pass some time in the sea home of his best friend Simon. The first day he meets two dolphins, very friendly and interested in him. And maybe for lack of company, or maybe cause he really like the dolphins, he starts to go out to meet them. But the dolphins are two hunk shapeshifters, George and Patrick, cousins and doms, who want a sub lover like him. Martin has some worries about accepting this relationship, but in the end he lets his heart drives him, instead of his mind. Martin is a quite beautiful character, even if sometime I found his submissive behaviour a little too sub... I know I know, is incoherent, and maybe is a demonstration that Jules Jones has really achieved to describe a perfect sub character. Patrick is a "preferibly" dom, but not a "must be". He deferred to George, and he can also manage to be a bottom sometimes. He really likes only two things, sex and food, and now he loves Martin. He is tender and young, and still needs to be cuddle. George is a real dom, he is in charge, of Patrick and Martin, and holds the weight of responsability on him. But like a good master, he knows when push, and when holds back. And he really cares of Martin, wants only to pleasure him. Sex between the three of them is more a natural need than a proof of feeling, but this is coherent with the partial animal nature of George and Martin; and what really matters to Martin is that they understand that is a choice of Martin to let them do what they do. I really like this book and as it takes me two day to read it, between the two reading session I continue to re-live mentally some scenes: this for me is a sign that this book will remain in my mind for many time and I will re-read it often. http://elisa-rolle.livejournal.com/68...

This is a good summary of what's been going on with the Native Am. (or, now, the preferred term is American Indian) since colonial days. Some really interesting and important history in a somewhat dryly written package. I learned a lot form this book - and for that it deservesmore than three stars but it was a bit sluggish to tread through in some parts. Still, great info on the impact of the fur trade, westward expansion, government interference and more recent militant movements from within the community (and some pretty neat anecdotes on the ghost dance, etc.)

I really thought I would love this, but not at all. In between all of the utter despair, heartbreak, & horror was a lot of boring, coma-inducing repetition. Reading this aloud to my husband, I had to use different voices to distinguish between father & son because of the sentence echoing & hundreds of "okay." "okay." conversations. I'm not against using voices (I do love me a good Cockney accent), it just was not interesting enough. I realize they were on a journey and it's very realistic in that respect: walk, camp, wake up, walk, eat, "okay", camp. It doesn't make for good reading though. Oh, and I thought early on McCarthy was making up a bunch of words. I guess it would help to have a degree in theology or something. I did like the ending though and not just because I could move on.

Listening on audio. Only moderately impressed. Still, inspired to write a 55 word story... a good one.

I love Michael McIntyre, I think he is a fantastic comedian and my nan got this book for christmas and had to read it after her. I found this a laugh out loud read and I could see him saying most of it in a stand up routine. It was typical Michael McIntyre and I found his childhood interesting to learn about. He talks about trying to make it as a comedian and I never realised just how tough it is and how much money you have to put into it. A great read that just made me love him even more.

This short story collection is all about boxers and boxing, and the movie Million Dollar Baby is based on a story in this collection (in fact, the book has been re-released with the title Million Dollar Baby: Stories from the Corner). I have no interest in boxing whatsoever, but the stories are wonderful.

Wanda rocks ass. you know, i just read what i could of Ellen DeGenere's bk,( forget the title, and forget the bk...)and it simply wasn't funny. reading Wanda directly after, well...really no comparison. the main difference is: she, Wanda, is FUNNY. (sorry, Ellen...but different strokes. and i was shocked i say shocked to read that people didn't think margaret cho is funny! these people must be dead. a looong time. even if you're dead u know her and she's funny! so, maybe if u r still dead since the 14th century and non reincarnated, to you she isn't funny. ok.) A wonderful book to read, as i did, after a long day's work and you just need to curl up with a girlfriend who makes you laugh, and relax. Enjoy. "APPROVAL RATING--During the early part of his term Bush enjoyed a 70% approval rating. the majority of us were satisfied with the job that he was doing. which makes sense to me, because he pretty much did everything i expected him to do. the economy is in the toilet. we're at war and everything's on fire. he's met all my expectations. he's right on target in my book. we have such low expectations of the president. we let Bush get away with stuff, lying and poor grammar. i think there are quite a few Americans who just feel like no matter what he does we gotta get behind him. you don't pick on the slow kid.you don't do that. you don't boo at the Special Olympics. it's not nice. they're all winners. it's like when you don't say anything when the retarded kid eats his ice cream with a fork. you just let them enjoy their ice cream."
