A story within a story within a story. Some great allusions to classic myth and other stories. Atwood's narrator, Iris, along with her sister Laura, are frank and real characters. Only through Laura's novel, also titled "The Blind Assasin" does the read slowly discover the horrible tragedies and disfunctions of a wealthy family growing up in Toranto during the Second World War. Atwood pulls readers in with the account of Laura's accidental death/suicide from page one, then leaders you onward to discover the reasons that prompted this event. I loved it. A book that delivers a sweet taste of revenge.

I really like the flow of the book, very well done, graphically pleasing and easy to follow. The story was definitely disturbing, while it has slight similarities to other ghost/haunting stories, the lessons Anya learns because of this ghost are eye-opening. A great read for any young woman "in love" with an uncatchable guy. I originally decided to read this because another book I was reading was frequently referring to this story, but for the life of me I cannot remember what book it was....

I guess this book wasn't as good as I was anticipating it to be, but I'm glad I read it. It is amazing to see what 1 man can do when he decides to do something worthwhile.

This book was sold to me as an Icelandic epic. It’s not a fairy tale, quite the opposite. The novel follows Bjartur, a rural sheep farmer who is firmly grounded in the day-to-day reality of eking out an existence by sheep farming in the mountains of Iceland. Bjartur is a very unheroic hero. He is stubborn, mean and close-minded. His heroism comes from his adherence to his ideals. As the title indicates, independence is everything to Bjartur. He worked for a rich family for close to two decades to be able to buy an unforgiving and cursed piece of land where he raises sheep to support his family. His livelihood is unimaginably difficult. Bjartur and his family suffer from 16-hour workdays, starvation and lack of medical care. The people around him, friends, family and acquaintances, all try to convince Bjartur to give up some of his independence to achieve small comforts. The central conflict of the novel is the struggle between Bjartur and his ideals and the pressures of society. It raises the question of the price of independence and whether it’s worth it. What pleased me so much about this book was the constant shift between extreme mundane realism and gorgeous epic poetry. Bjartur’s life is half mindless toil and hardship and half sublime communion with nature. The novel transitions from lengthy discussions of the sheep’s intestinal parasites to reflections on the movement of seasons. Most people’s lives consist of some combination of banal and transcendent experiences and “Independent People” has a way of weaving them together in a persuasive manner. The book doesn’t offer any lessons but it provides a story of how even the most focused and hardened man can be slowly ground down by the vagaries of life.

I read this is college in my non-western religions course and it's one that I've gone back to several times. It's a fun way to explore a religion unfamiliar to many Americans, all in the context of Winnie the Pooh and some of our favorite Pooh characters.

Excellent plot and writing; but oddly the author decides to give the ending away when he's got about 50-60 pages to go. I was completely shocked by this and rather annoyed. It's like you're walking along having a great day, and then Markus comes and yanks the rug out from under your feet and ruins the ending for you. Honestly, once he gives it away, there's no point in reading the last 50-60 pages. I have no idea why he did this.

Looking for readable contemporary literary criticism? Who knew it was out there? Chi'en has worthy readings of Junot Diaz and Nabokov.

A heartbreaking and powerful story from our history. I am so impressed that it is her first book. I thought about it long after I finished.
