I didn't get very far into this book. In the second or third chapter, he gets mad at his dogs for killing some of the farm's (free-ranging) chickens, and in response leaves them tied up for a week with the rotting chickens hanging from their necks. The point of that story is essentially to introduce the one rooster (Lazarus) who survived the dogs... he doesn't seem to see anything strange or wrong about his treatment of the dogs. I found that I couldn't respect him enough to even keep reading after that passage. It was stomach-turning.

written mid 1980s, Postman's well established arguments for why he thinks television is instrumental in the United States' process of intellectual atrophy. Never naive, Postman speaks with conviction from a position of concern. He doesn't cram his arguments down your throat, but leads gently, with sparing humor, never failing to make the gravity of the situation known.

it was ok, kind of boring, but a quick read. more about paris, clearly, than about London.

This book has great stuff in it, but it is a little inacessible. If you have the time, check out these leactures which do a great job of explaining it... http://webcast.berkeley.edu/course_de...

After reading the first book in this series with an overall feeling of dismay, and 'Oh no, what happened, Robin Hobb?', I've been reluctant to continue on with this series. A friend told me they actually gave up reading the third book due to annoyance, so it didn't bode well. About a quarter of the way into the book I nearly gave up completely with the endless droning from Nevare about his 'problem'. It was like reading Twilight all over again, but instead of lust for vampires, it was a over zealous lust for describing in ridiculous detail ON EVERY PAGE about any morsel of food in sight, and incessant weight issues. I reluctantly trawled on, and was glad that I did. I thoroughly enjoyed the second quarter of the book as it was more of the usual Hobb style that I've grown to love. I did enjoy this book, moreso than the first book in this trilogy, but feel it could have been much shorter than it was. The story is very vague about the most important areas in the book, i.e. iron, magic, and nature. It skims over the subjects with a brief overview which feels like 'this happens just because it does', rather than any specific meaning in it, or it feeling like any thought has gone into it whatsoever. Maybe the third book will resolve these issues. I'm glad this wasn't the first trilogy of Hobb's that I've read, otherwise I'd be a little put off reading any more of her work, so for anyone reading this that isn't a huge fan, I implore you to read the Farseer and Tawny Man trilogies which are by far the best works, as well as the Liveship trilogy being a definite third favourite.

Good overview of the 'evolution' of science/methods over time. Nifty read for anyone interested in learning more about the context of 'science.'

Something about Vonnegut and how he distills a complex situation and idea into these otherwise meaningless quips is charming. And like Slaughterhouse-Five, it is a quick but heavy read tinted with the absurd. He does a good job of evoking my sympathy for the main character, though. A pretty good read, but I'm sure there are better out there. Of course, if you like Vonnegut, then you won't miss it.
