After reading the first book in this series with an overall feeling of dismay, and 'Oh no, what happened, Robin Hobb?', I've been reluctant to continue on with this series. A friend told me they actually gave up reading the third book due to annoyance, so it didn't bode well. About a quarter of the way into the book I nearly gave up completely with the endless droning from Nevare about his 'problem'. It was like reading Twilight all over again, but instead of lust for vampires, it was a over zealous lust for describing in ridiculous detail ON EVERY PAGE about any morsel of food in sight, and incessant weight issues. I reluctantly trawled on, and was glad that I did. I thoroughly enjoyed the second quarter of the book as it was more of the usual Hobb style that I've grown to love. I did enjoy this book, moreso than the first book in this trilogy, but feel it could have been much shorter than it was. The story is very vague about the most important areas in the book, i.e. iron, magic, and nature. It skims over the subjects with a brief overview which feels like 'this happens just because it does', rather than any specific meaning in it, or it feeling like any thought has gone into it whatsoever. Maybe the third book will resolve these issues. I'm glad this wasn't the first trilogy of Hobb's that I've read, otherwise I'd be a little put off reading any more of her work, so for anyone reading this that isn't a huge fan, I implore you to read the Farseer and Tawny Man trilogies which are by far the best works, as well as the Liveship trilogy being a definite third favourite.
