I can not believe that I've spent the last 12 years working in the Accounting field being such a good steward of my employers money but could never get a good grasp on my own money. The Total Money Makeover book has helped me go from paycheck-to-paycheck-thinking to wealth-building-thinking. Once my eyes were opened (I read the book in 2 days) I knew my financial life would never be the same. I asked my husband to read the book and when he started sending me texts like: Do you know that if we invest X dollars in a good mutual fund from age 30 to age 70 that it will be around 5.5 million dollars?!! I knew Dave had him hook, line & sinker. A good percentage of our marital issues surrounded money but there are no arguments on that subject anymore. We understand what the short term goal is (get debt free) and what the long term goals are (remain debt free & build wealth) so most of the decisions have already been made. Once we saw what "keeping up with the Joneses" does to your greatest wealth building tool (income), we decided that we could cut our life down to "rice & beans" for 2 to 2 1/2 years, clean up the massive mess we had made, and reclaim the nearly $2,000 per month we were paying on debt. I sure wish we had this book as teenagers/ younger adults, I can only imagine where we would be now. But even still, my son will never remember how his parents where up to their eyeballs in debt. We still have about $35k (down from 73k) in consumer debt to go, but thank God our financial family tree has been changed forever.

This book might sting if you're not careful. My favorite thing about this book is that I keep loaning it to people, and not only does it never come back, but most of them actually get at least half of the obscure references to out-of-print pagan theologies, tenets of physics and aging Lovecraft novels. Says something about my circle of friends. Like most of Wilson's work, this book pushes you a little outside of your comfort zone. More than just a fascinating read, it will really affect the way you think and act. It makes you accept the unknown, the unseen and the unexpected so much easier... all of a sudden, change is OK and we're all a little weird and that's OK too. I've never been so happy to buy a 7th copy of a book. And I intend to keep giving them out to people I come across that should read them, and keep expecting that those "loans" will never be returned. Perhaps I should attach a spare tire to one and see if that makes it come back...just glue the spine to the rubber...

Tony Costa is a homicide detective that is investigating a series of murders of blue-eyed, blonde-haired young men that look a lot like the vice cop that he is dating. Ryan Nilsson is happy to assist in the homicide investigation when he is asked by Tony's Captain. Tony is not happy that his lover is going to be in harm's way but there's no way he can say no without admitting his feelings about the other cop and Tony is not ready to come out of the closet yet. I thought this was a good book and I really liked Tony and Ryan. They had a great connection and the mystery was good. A nice first book in a series.

** spoiler alert ** This was a quick read, not totally bad but not that good. The emergence of the movie makes it unnecessary to say much about the plot. This book seems so popular that most people know someone who's read it. The help of the title refers to the black women who served as maids and nursemaids to the white families of Mississippi. Suffice it to say that the maids are good people who do their best while the white "ladies" are selfish and cruel, except, of course, for the Stockett stand-in, a character named Miss Skeeter, and another character, a representative of the so-called "white trash," a character who doesn't seem to know that she is not supposed to sit down at the same table with her household help. Although the story is set in the early 1960's, that time period seems almost pasted on as an after-thought, announcing historical events as the plot moves along in time. Miss Skeeter and the twelve women who share their stories with her produce a book (called, not surprisingly, Help), which imagines itself bringing enlightenment to all. At least Stockett created two living characters (Aibileen and Minny), but the rest are wooden and barely believable. And wouldn't you know it, after the book is published, Aibileen and Minny stay in Mississippi and deal with that changing world, while Miss Skeeter flies off to New York City to become a writer. I wonder what that Miss Skeeter will write about after The Help has had its run.
