I read a review that called this the best romantic novel of the 20th century. I read it with a great deal anticipation. Toward the end, though, I got the feeling that there had to be something I was missing. I re-read and re-read, but I still didn't find it.

whereas others found this depressing, I found it curiously optimistic. I can't guarantee a similar interpretation by others

I was hooked by the first page. There was no pussy-footing around with this book, it started off with a bang. Or an explosion. Or rather the informing of an explosion. This isn't a story about grief and loss. At least it's not just about grief and loss. There's a mystery. There's things we need to find out. We follow Kathryn as she not only deals with the death of her beloved husband, but has to deal with the aftermath that her life was not as it seemed. That it wasn't totally a tragic accident. It's a novel that sucks you in in a way you don't know why you've been sucked in but you really don't want to get out. The characters, every character, are rich and full. You truly like Kathryn because she's not perfect, therefor you can relate to her and you can truly sympathize with her struggle. And like her, you want to seek out the truth. What's really going on? From the writing, to the story, to the characters, Anita Shreve truly does a remarkable job. Her descriptions are gorgeous, you don't even have to have seen a picture of anything she describes to get an image of it, she tells it perfectly and you can form it easily. The only true flaw at all, and it's very debatable, is that I wasn't fond with the ending. It almost felt as if Shreve was fishing for a bunch of explanations that didn't even fit and just sort of threw them all together. Suddenly everything was happening at once and I wasn't quite sure what to make of it all. It almost felt that there was too much closure. With such raw reality that Shreve had been dealing with this whole time, such a finite ending didn't seem to fit. But I'm sure a lot of people appreciated the way it ending, a true open and shut case that gave them the same sense of closure Kathryn got. Either way, this book is a definite must-read. So engaging you'll wonder how you read it so fast.

Why oh why did i not read this sooner? It has been waiting to be found on my bookshelf for a couple of years at least, mostly because i never expected it to turn out to be anything special, because scholastic turns out these children's books by the dozen, so usually the plot and writing are mediocre at best. This was my mistake, because this is the hidden treasure of a book that will entertain you on the Harry Potter level that you secretly hope for when picking up anything with some magical inclinations in it. Kerr has the absolutely best sense of humor and i have to admit i am now addicted to it. I even laughed out loud in a completely unladylike way at few inappropriate times that earned me a "crazyperson" title from my family.

Although I really enjoyed this unbelievably tragic tale of love and loss, I feel it did drag on a bit longer than it needed to. That seems to be my only grumble regarding this story. It is a gothic tale set in a castle in the countryside of England. The story takes place in two time periods: during the bombing of London during WWII and in 1992. The 3 BLythe sisters who live in the castle alone during 1992 who are mere curiousities for those who have grown up in the area, are surrounded in mystery. Thier father wrote a famous fairy tale of the Mud Man and left them the castle. Edie is an editor whose cold and distant mother has ties to these sisters from when she stays with them in her childhood during the war. Edie tries to uncover the mysteries of why her mother is the way she is and what role the sisters played in it by visiting the sisters to intervew for her book on how the Mud Man came to be which is in itself another mystery. As you can see, there are many untold layers to this story which is unfolded brilliantly by Ms. Morton. This is a tragic story of love and loss and found myself crying and feeling very sad at the end. But it is well worth losing yourself in this wonderfully told story.

A great read from a new author who will make his mark on the children's books circuit for many years. Bravo!

Set during WWII in Naples, Italy, army officer's job is to "vett" engagements of young Italian women to enlistees. Predictably, this stuffy Englishman falls in love with a local, but the setting, the Italian language and the descriptions of food were most enjoyable.

I was so disappointed by this book. I loved the premise: big city girl quits her job and moves out to the country, spending her days working in the garden and achieving self-actualization. Exactly the sort of escapism that you would never have the luxury to do yourself, but would adore having the opportunity to read about. I think I gave up somewhere between 100 and 150 pages in. She starts out with her thoughts all cluttered, and I felt pretty frenzied and unenthusiastic about what I was reading. But okay, maybe I just needed to wait for her to actually go through her move and then the story would pick up. It doesn't. I was expecting to read some calm self-reflection about discovering beauty in life and sorting out what's important in life, while enjoying a natural setting and some enjoyable anecdotes about the unexpected hardships of working in a garden. Instead, her disjointed thoughts and frenzied confusion just continues on and on. I felt completely detached from the author and her experiences, and got no enjoyment out of reading the chronicles of her experience.

I liked this book, because the main character is a bookseller, and I can relate. The mystery isn't too interesting, although it's definitely a twist near the end. I just couldn't get attached to the main character though.

Hornby beni her zamanki gibi güldürdü. Bu konuda daha ciddi konulara giriyor ve ne kadar başarılı olduğunu tam olarak bilmiyorum. Son cümlenin kafamı biraz çizmemi sağladığını biliyorum ...
