I honestly did not realize that Because I am Furniture was a book written in poetry and verses until my friend pointed it out. And because poetry and verses were not my forte nor is it my considered my interest, it was hard to get into the book. Plus, it took only like 20 words to describe a whole scene which means, not a lot of details. I don't like details but I still need them to get what's happening. However, what I did like about Because I am Furniture was the flow of the words. Because it's in poetry format, it was a very quick read and only took about an hour to read a 300 page book. I liked the subjects that Thalia had incorporated - rape, abuse, family and friendship. And it's because of those subjects that Because I am Furniture became a gripping novel. The main character of this book, Anke, is what you would want to protagonist to be: strong, brave and courageous. Though at first, she was afraid of her father and just stood in the sidelines watching him abuse her family. However, when she finally realizes that she has a voice, she uses it to save her family. She had to struggle between what's right and what's wrong and ultimately make a sacrifice. To break her family to save it or to keep her family and break it. Honestly though, I couldn't tell whey her father didn't abuse Anke. He abused her siblings to get to her but never to her directly. I don't think Thalia really covered this topic in Because I am Furniture. He even ended up abusing people out of her family but never to her. Overall, Because I am Furniture is a compelling novel that reaches out and encourages the abused to take a stand.

This book is a classic for a reason. The times I had a hard time reading it were the same reason I struggle at times with Shakespeare. It is very good though and had me pondering some ideas from time to time.

Mary Gaitskill treats us to an array of flawed folk in this somewhat-seesawing-but-by-and-large-accomplished collection of short fiction. Ms. Gaitskill’s preoccupation is with the interior, and here we see her traversing the mindscapes of her characters with verisimilitudinous deftness. Although at times Ms. Gaitskill seems like she’s trying a tad too hard to wring something original from her prose, at others she transcends mere cogency and/or the corporeal via a blend of improbable metaphor and synesthesia. Her tales are most successful when anchored by some sense of imposed temporality (e.g. the two hours of a flight or the strictures of a babysitting evening), but even the sprawling, open-ended ones (“Stuff,” for example), while failing on some levels, achieve a remarkable depth of character. Ultimately, Ms. Gaitskill’s superior characterization, hyperbolic manipulation of language, and wicked sense of humor infuse this collection as a whole with a vibrant importance that is all but impossible to deny.

2.5. The extra half star mostly for the cover. Interesting premise, but it failed for me in large part for one reason: I hated Ruby. And this is a novel that needs you to believe in the beautiful magic of the most narcissistic, vicious character I have ever read. Suma spends so much time in the beginning "telling" me all about how wonderful Ruby is instead of "showing" me anything, that the more Chloe went on about how charming her sister was, the more I couldn't wait for her to wake up and realize how reckless and controlling she was. Alas, she never does. She just keeps trying to convince me otherwise. But that's not the only reason the novel bothered me. Suma never sets up or develops her scenes. She throws you in the middle of it and then waits until after you're confused to give you description. For example, there's a scene where her and London are standing in the village green and London shouts at her if she's coming, only after the dialogue does Suma explain that London is in a car that wasn't there before. The whole novel is like that and after awhile it wore on me always trying to figure out what was going on. Without developed scenes, nothing fully happened, just the shadow of a scene here, the hint of something happening there, nothing more than all these little questions that come up so that by the end I wasn't sure if all of my questions had been answered. It was so frustrating to read, I almost quit a hundred times. My biggest frustration is Suma kept getting in the way of the story, purposely stopping me from funding anything out to create the sense of mystery. A few discoveries to pique my interest or a bit of wonder from Chloe would have gone a long way to pull me into the story. Chloe never wondered why strange things were happening, or if she bought into them, explained to us why she didn't need to ask the right questions. And if she ever did get close to asking them, Suma interrupted the scene to keep us from finding anything out. I understand the feel of magic, the mystery that Suma was going for, but she went about the wrong way creating that eerie feeling. I never quite worked up the ability to suspend my disbelief when Chloe never worked up a sense of wonder herself. There were times when she showed hope of trying to figure out the mystery of what Olive and Ruby where doing to the town, but then she'd settle back into her content oblivion and I was left with all my questions. The most interesting line in the novel was the statement that just maybe Chloe was locked up in PA imagining all of this. I wish that had been expounded on more. I like that there's a hint of magic without a firm resolve and I loved the eerie quality of the story, but I'd rather Chloe had been a little more proactive, to be amazed or confused or anything other than merely enthralled with Ruby and trying to convince me to be the same. There was a lot of promise in this novel. Suma shows some talent with words. With easy edits I could have loved it. Maybe Suma's next novel will be better developed.

I am a huge fan of this author duo. I am a huge fan of the Cut & Run series and this book is just as good. There is so much romantic tension in this story it gives you the butterflies in your tummy, oooh I love that in a book!
Unexpected treat! A Hopeful Heart is a fresh twist on the prairie brides theme. This time brides have to go to school and learn how to be a rancher's wife before they can even court. This fun read has a bit of suspense and comedy mixed throughout. The characters spring off the page with life.

This is a many-facetted drama which takes place in the middle-age and is centred around the building of a cathedral. It's very well written, with many characters, the only critique, I have, is that most of the prominent characters are only decribed by their actions and by what other characters think about them, most prominently Walerean Bigod, Walerean Bigod is not decribed very well at the start, it makes is hard to conjure up a picture of this bishop up at first, a little more facial description would have been appreciated. Then again it's also a force of the book, because you would not really know him if it was the first time you meet him. But all in all, a very well written book.

A delightful picture book! This is the true story of a "miracle colt" told from his point of view. Twister tells the tale of his home at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch. He was born to a pregnant mare that survived a tractor trailer accident on the highway. The horses had all been headed for a meat-packing plant. The other horses are introduced with side-bars and captivating art work. The book is uplifting and heartwarming for a reader of any age, no matter if you are a horse lover or not. It is a story that ends "happily ever after".
