I read this to see if I could put it in the Albion library. It is about a girl who breaks up with her boyfriend, and then he writes a song that becomes a hit about their break-up. Consequently, the press and everyone else are trying to interview her, and her life is turned upside down. I would have given this book a 4 if it wasn't for the horrible language all the way through it. Bad, bad, bad.....

This book was really good. It is the story of Janessa McNeil who becomes very ill suddenly, and no cause can be found. Her husband is a renowned physician who chairs a committee that has stated that Lyme disease can be cured with a short round of antibiotics, and this finding has caused insurance companies to stop covering long-term treatment for Lyme. Janessa gets a call from a man who states he has infected her with Lyme disease because of her husband's work. She continues to get sicker, her husband refuses to believe her, and he leaves her. She has to deal with her illness and her stalker by herself. The book reminded me a lot of Jody Picoult's books--the same intense drama centered on a modern topic with twists and turns and a shocking ending. In the author's notes at the end, she describes her own battle with Lyme disease. Collins is a Christian writer, so her books do not have the same kind of language and sex that Picoult's books do. I am anxious to read more of her work and see if I enjoy it as much as this one.

Try as I might, I just can't get into this on any level and I am a huge fan of academic studies of food and drink. I gave up early in the book and have not finished...

I think this book "Elsewhere" is a fantastic book. It's interesting to read people's different view's about the afterlife. Gabrielle Zevin wrote a very creative way of it. I enjoyed reading about Liz's life, or death I might say. I kinda find it gross though, the relationship between Liz and Owen. I mean, he is, like, 10 years older than her if you put it that way. Technically it would be illegal if they were together. But good thing it's just a story.

I read The Women on the Porch about 15 years ago, shortly after moving into Benfolly, the old house on the Cumberland River where the author and her husband Alan Tate lived during the 1930's. Although I remembered liking the book enough to give it 4 stars and suggest it for our Book Club reading, I have found on its rereading that I didn't remember much about the book - or perhaps now am noticing different things about it than I did then. I have wanted to reread this book for years and am so glad that I finally have. One of the things that has always struck me about Caroline Gordon's writing is her clear and distinctive descriptions of the natural world in which her characters reside and the story unfolds. Her thoughtfully detailed verbal illustrations of scenes carries me totally into the world she is describing, mesmerizes me with memory and recognition. Her notice of the smallest leaf picking up light, the aspect of the sky, the quality of air, the surrounding flora works to capture the very essence of the outdoor world in beautiful wording that vividly illuminates the setting for each scene in the story, placing the reader solidly into the place of which she writes. And sense of PLACE is a very important aspect of Gordon's writing.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the parts focusing on Lola & Beli, I must admit that I enjoyed awkward, nerdy Oscar's parts the most. On the rare occasion that he had dialogue, I found the way he spoke hilarious. Maybe that's just the inner geek in me identifying with him. I wish I didn't spend so much time agonizing over trying to find out who the narrator was for the first half of the book. I think I was distracted and may have missed things. For future readers. . .don't stress over the narrator . . . you aren't missing anything. Just keep reading and the narrator will reveal his/herself in due time!

a delightful mix between satire and amateur anthropology that revolves around simple truth that is now authoritatively backed by scientific study. Intentionally obtuse but a generally enjoyable analysis of conspicious consumption and conspicious leisure that is of great use in deciphering culture.
