Eh? Didn't love it, didn't hate it. I like the metaphor of 'losing it' as it applies to Tess and her life. Her friend's around the bend over her parents' split, with both of them already hooked up with someone else. Her mother, then her father, lose it and drop out of their lives to live in a survival camp. Her grandmother, one of my favorite characters by the way, is losing her credibility with her daughter...the woman who ran away to live in a survival camp. In the middle of all this chaos is Tess, plotting to lose her virginity to hunky Ben. Lots of directions this book could have taken, but the book seemed very superficial. Neither Tess nor anyone else seemed to truly reflect on what's to be gained by losing it. I was left wanting so much more. Maybe my expectations are too high.

Not Fire and Brimstone I generally am not a fast reader, but was able to zip through this story in a couple of days. If you are a parent, I feel you will especially connect with this book. We all love our children so much. This story tells us, in detail, about a situation in which a family almost lost their son. Of course a book titled Heaven is For Real, written by a pastor is going to be heavy on the Bible verses and lessons. I am not an overly religious person but didn't find the book too preachy or over the top. I enjoyed the story very much. This isn't a fire and brimstone, you must repent book. It focuses on the description of heaven and lets the reader know through multiple examples that Heaven is for Real. Thank you Burpo family for sharing your story.

Review added from I just love the way Cat Clarke writes. Her characters just draw me in and I always feel like I know them personally. I really loved Alice, despite her reluctance to come forward at the beginning. I think it took her quite some time to grasp what had really happened on the night that Tara died. I couldn't help but like Tara as the book progressed either. I felt sorry for her; what everyone saw was mainly an image portrayed to make her stand out as popular. She was no different from any other girl in secondary school trying to make her way. I loved Jack! He was completely adorable; geeky but cool at the same time. A boy with a heart! From the first chapter you are drawn into the story. The last line in the first chapter really blew me away and I was compelled to continue reading. It had touches of magical realism yet seemed completely realistic. It reminded me of a darker version of The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen with elements of the Mean Girls weaved into it. The book had a brilliant plot which had me gripped all the way through. My only problem with Cat Clarke, is that she can't write faster - desperately in need of two Cat Clarke books a year! (No pressure) Cat Clarke is seriously an awesome author and I would definitely recommend you read both of her books. I love the tone and the voice she writes with. You could easily lose a day of your life when you start reading one of her books. I can't wait to see what she writes next.

Very cool book, I love the ambiguity of the society. Is it good or bad? Are the people better off, or do they just break different rules to create ordered mayhem?

I was disappointed in the ending, I felt like it was a continuation of the series. Where is the ending, the closure?

Well written. At times, descriptively blunt. Scary that we're over there. We shouldn't be 'training' sons to kill. Even after reading this first-hand account of a young man being over there, it didn't change my mind. We just shouldn't be over there. There's no real reason. Just another culture of fear we're allowing to perpetrate through out culture. Sorry. Those boys could be heroes at home designing a new world. Just my thoughts.

I laughed out loud while reading this. Everybody is turning into rhinos and I think the message that life is pretty much absurd comes through pretty clear.
