Nirati Nayak niratinayak — The Crystal World made me feel uncomfortable, in ways both good and not so good. On the good side, the constant repetition of the same descriptions and words (jeweled, deliquescing, glittering, etc.) added to my understanding of the crystallization process by creating a kind of textual parallel: images and metaphors, like the reduplicating crystallizing objects, jut out of the text without any noticeable purpose but to better draw a landscape that is difficult to "see." Ah, but not really, see. And that's where the book's unconventional narrative combined with the writing to make my discomfort profitable: by doubling events and characters but placing them in ambiguous circumstances without clear narrative expectations, I had no choice but to distill purpose from the philosophical implications of the crystallization. Which was fun and unexpected, and nicely kept the "phenomenon" from becoming an excuse for humans to do what humans do (and which happens all the time in poorly written sci-fi). On the other hand, it's impossible to read this from outside of a post-colonial and post-feminist perspective, so there's definitely some not-so-good uneasiness to work through in that vein. All in all, though, a worthwhile novel, and the kind of book made for dissection and conversation with a friend over drinks.

Yizhuo Luo ellie8535 — Review added from I just love the way Cat Clarke writes. Her characters just draw me in and I always feel like I know them personally. I really loved Alice, despite her reluctance to come forward at the beginning. I think it took her quite some time to grasp what had really happened on the night that Tara died. I couldn't help but like Tara as the book progressed either. I felt sorry for her; what everyone saw was mainly an image portrayed to make her stand out as popular. She was no different from any other girl in secondary school trying to make her way. I loved Jack! He was completely adorable; geeky but cool at the same time. A boy with a heart! From the first chapter you are drawn into the story. The last line in the first chapter really blew me away and I was compelled to continue reading. It had touches of magical realism yet seemed completely realistic. It reminded me of a darker version of The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen with elements of the Mean Girls weaved into it. The book had a brilliant plot which had me gripped all the way through. My only problem with Cat Clarke, is that she can't write faster - desperately in need of two Cat Clarke books a year! (No pressure) Cat Clarke is seriously an awesome author and I would definitely recommend you read both of her books. I love the tone and the voice she writes with. You could easily lose a day of your life when you start reading one of her books. I can't wait to see what she writes next.

Ian Rojas ivans567ir32a9 — From the begining I was in love with the evernight series. Each book taking me into a loving, breath taking, and yet so very refreshing adventure. Afterlife delievered that enduring love that Bianca and Lucus both have for one another, as well as the struggles that love often put before any relationships. I was glad to see unity, which was so need to bring family, friends, human, wraith, and vampire together. In addition I love the outlook that was given toward lifes choices. A pleasure to read, but agony to have it revealed that this is the final book. :(
