Posted on Almost Grown-up Blog on 9/6/11: I had read the two previous books in this trilogy (The Looking Glass Wars, Seeing Redd) and while I did not find them riveting, I did enjoy them enough to proceed on to the conclusion ArchEnemy. ArchEnemy has much of the charm of the previous novels in the series, which is obviously what drew me to it. A retelling of Alice in Wonderland with political intrigue, family, magic, and just a dash of romance in the background. Obviously I enjoyed some parts, particularly the scenes between Alyss and Dodge and the maddening caterpillar oracles. The book certainly quenched any thirst for violence that I've experienced lately, but while the first two novels held my interest, something about ArchEnemy just did not click with me. Perhaps it was that the main antagonist was not the evil Redd as it had been previously but King Arch. Perhaps it was the overt stating of "Little did they knows"-- that is, revealing to the reader in advance what they would come to learn in time anyway. Or maybe it was the embellished descriptions of different action moves, very Matrix-esque. Maybe the book was simply too "plotty" as opposed to "Alyssy." I didn't feel as though we saw enough into a character's motivations as we had in the past. Rating: 2/5. If you've read the previous books and feel the need to see the series through, go ahead and pick it up, but my feelings toward ArchEnemy were lackluster at best.

4.5 stars but hell, this was a fantastic book. This review contains no spoilers unless you dare to check the tags. As the conclusion to the Newsfeed series, Blackout came out with the speed of a bullet train. For an author who I had previously written off as just one of those writers who has to explicate EVERYTHING (not that her books are bad, but I had made my peace with the writing style), Grant really cut out a lot of the extraneous detailing this time around. The book still is almost 600 pages, but 97% of it is actually stuff related to forwarding the plot further. From Feed to Blackout, it's very easy to see Grant's progression and maturation as a writer. The whole book played on my emotions like a pro. I wanted to laugh, cry, and scream all within one chapter. (view spoiler)For a zombie book, Grant spends a lot of her time developing the cast of human characters. Yes, there are zombies, but they aren't the focus of the series. It is all about the people. It is all about Shaun and Georgia and Mahir and Becks and Maggie and Buffy and Dave and Alaric and everyone on the After the End Times team. Does the author have a degree in psychology? She sure seems to know a lot about how to write convincing characters. None of the books in this series had an issue with having an intriguing plot. There is nothing boring, IMO, about espionage (political, corporate, or epidemiological). But without all the text redundancy, Blackout turned out to be a hurricane of action. Again, the focus of Grant's books are on the humans, not the zombies. There were only a couple of major zombie scenes in this book, so the main conflict was "Who the hell is killing people willy nilly?" (view spoiler) The lead up to the end of the book is exhilarating. There are no dull road trips, only tense car rides through woods filled with zombie bears. The sense of urgency that the characters carried around contributed a tight, fast paced story. The next issue I want to address is the romance. Spoilers to follow, so if you don't want to bleed from your eyeballs and to find your face melting off (yes, an Indiana Jones reference just for kicks), skip to the next section. (view spoiler) I subtracted half a star because I thought the final confrontation scene was a little...unnatural. The ending (view spoiler) just rang a little false. As the author of the novel that has earned a spot in my mind for eternity as being one of the most realistic post apocalyptic books on the market, Grant went too far off from the realism. I just wish that the final chapter didn't feel like the ending to the seventh Harry Potter book. After everything that happened, the resolution was too pat to leave a truly satisfying end.
