رمان جالبی است اما "نان و شراب"را بیشتر دوست داشتم

What I learned from this book? Exactly what can happen with a great concept meets an unfinished idea. Great start...and then the author just... meanders off...somewhere... leaving me with nothing that interests me WHATsoever.

Includes material potentially inappropriate for pre-teens, such as use of the b**** word and reference to a teacher who has skeletons in his closet connected to the fact that he enjoys all the young female students at the academy. I'm glad I read this before passing it on to younger relatives. I'm not even finished with it yet. However, the writing style is patronizing for adult readers (harry potter grade level) and yet, as I said, could be questionable reading for kids the same age as the main character (8-13 years old). It's marketed as being for 12 year olds and above... I do enjoy the "bonuses", all the mathematical references (number theory too!) and computer science jokes. They're what carries this book. Everything else seems very cliche for the times... Also, how many stories have there been now about some sort of gifted child with rich adoptive parents who finds his way/adventure in an off-beat private school? Boy, am I sure that most foster kids wish they had these Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler type wealthy but oblivious and disconnected parents. It's a writer's cop-out (writer's license, whatever) to have a character who doesn't have any real parental restrictions to speak of and yet often lives in a comfortable and safe home environment. Also, why does the wise all-knowing authority figure, mysterious though they may be, always male and generally a "white" male culturally if not in physical appearance? Examples: Dumbledore, Gandalf, Aslan, Merlin, Obi Wan Kenobi, and Darth Vader even (though we know who did the voice), the list goes on. It's time that we opened the curtains and revealed the wizards for who they truly are.

An interesting account of pre-war America from an upper-class perspective, though I had to stop reading at page 100 for lack of plot. Also, the characters aren't likable or compelling enough to wonder or care what happens to them.

100% pleased with the historical details and overall feel of the book, probably about 75% happy with the plot, which seems to drag at times in an endless repetition of known issues, and with the transitions from one character to another, which are occasionally confusing.

I absolutely love this book! No, not because it brings back fond childhood memories...I had never even heard of it until about a year ago. I used to work with severely physically and mentally disabled kids. We had a speech pathologist who came to my class twice a week, and she read this book to us once. She is a delightful woman, by far the best speech path we have ever had! I don't know if this is really such a great book, but it is so much fun to hear Ann read. I would actually request this book every now and then!

Rereading for Bookends as our Long Summer Read and thoroughly enjoying it all over again. Now with time and experience under my belt, it reads a little differently. The characters have not aged even though I have. Perspective is a good thing. Who am I relating to? Stiff Nancy, or Penelope? Hummm

When a series is this unrelentingly bleak and violent, it gets hard to reach new heights of horror and revulsion, but Kirkman's world and characters are still gripping. Volume 4 doesn't do anything above and beyond what the first three books did, but it keeps the reader at the same high level of involvement. You still care about the characters, and Kirkman still emotionally and physically beats them bloody. Fortunately he is mature enough to punctuate his narrative with small rays of light, hope, and humor, which makes this series not only believable and bearable, but ultimately even more tragic.

Loved it! I flew threw it, I was engaged on every page. A wonderfully told story about the black and white divide in Jackson, Mississippi.
