This is one of those books that is a guilty pleasure. If you read in spurts and want a quick laugh, I highly reccomend it.

I didn't want to like this book- I kept thinking about all of my criticisms except that the more I read it, the more I could relate to it. I appreciate the lens of the yoga poses and the ways in which she is grappling to understand her life!

Review (before reading): Woot Tash and Hugo are back!!! I love them. I was really hoping Fiona Walker would leave Oddlode and now she has!! can't wait! Review (After reading): Okay this book was such a disappointment that I had to create new shelves, 'disappointments' and 'regrets'. Turns out she didn't leave Oddlode, Oddlode is very much present throughout this book!! argh! I think one problem Fiona Walker has is cramming too many of her characters in one book. I get the fact that all the characters in all her books are in the same world etc. etc. but they don't all have to show up in EVERY book (or at least if they are, she should also have Felix and Phoebe, but they're never present!). what was the point having Spurs there for example?? If she had instead focused on Tash and Hugo even at the expense of cutting the book down to half its size, it would have been so much better. As you can see above, I was hoping for some real Tash and Hugo fun, but sadly this was lacking. Hugo was a douche throughout the book and Tash was a bit of a mess, I didn't enjoy reading their story at all. Instead I'm going to pretend this book never existed and keep memories of the Tash and Hugo I love in tact. Supporting characters weren't much better, Becca was an annoying cow, Faith was kinda cool but again a mess. There was no one I was rooting for, which defeats the whole purpose of a chicklit. One thing however...I er... didn't actually get to the end of the book. It was too much, I stopped caring half way through, I really did. This has never happened to me with Fiona Walker, she has written some of my favourite books (Kiss Chase), but this is one of the worst sequels I've ever read.

The 32-page bibliography alone is worth three stars. An excellent addition to any mythology library.

The first chapter is a little hard to get thru- the first few pages the prose is a bit stilted. If you read the whole series, this makes sense-you are watching the character grow and change, from a vain, shallow, pompous girl to an infinitely compassionate, self-sacrificing hero of the realm. I hate spoilers, so I'm not going to give you any, but I will say this: Phedre is the one of the most unique, original, compelling protagonists in modern litarature. Her strength is not in her ability to fight, toe to toe- but in her ability to defeat her enemies from her knees. My favorite quote from the entire series is "That which yields is not always weak." Worth a read for anyone: sick of the conventions of action and genre fiction, who appreciates powerful female protagonists, and who isn't opposed to a one-handed read. =)

If this book was a fictional account of some ancient women and their husband, it would have been OK, but because it is about Jacob, Leah, and Rebecca, I was disappointed and in some cases disgusted by the content. Why would a Jewish woman write this way about her prophet? I appreciate that they were real people, real women, but they were also GOOD people. This book was too salacious.

Ok, so this is book with religious ties, which is a bit off course for my typical style of book i like to read. However, I did really enjoy the book and the way things were presented. It's basically a story about a man, his relationship with his family and how that turns him to God. Like I said, not a typical book for me, but I branched out and tried it. Really liked the story, but that's about where it ended for me. No defining moment of my life :)

I loved this historical series when I was in elementary school. Each book was a stand alone story and featured a young woman from a noteworthy historical period. This one was my absolute favorite and took place during the California gold rush. I wish you could still buy these in stores!
