Didn't love it, didn't hate it. It was good.

This book is not meant to rush through. It's meant to read slowly and enjoy the beautiful language and the slow pace of life. This is a beautiful look at Welsh village life and brings us back to a time when family was everything and it was okay to be fiercely loyal to what's right. I loved the vulnerability of our protagonist Huw and despite his tough-guy anticts, he was so sweet at heart. There were parts of the story that were so slow, so slow, that I wondered if I'd ever plod my way through. I'll leave you with a couple of my favorite quotes from the book: "I thought when I was a young man that I would conquer the world with truth. I thought I would lead an army greater than Alexander ever dreamed of, not to conquer nations, but to liberate mankind. With truth. With the golden sound of the Word. But only a few heart the trumpet. Only a few understood." "Ordinary things like teapots may be talked about because we know them and they are solid under the hand. But to talk of the world that is hidden in every woman is a journey of pain, for the words are not in use to tell of it, and to use the words that are is only a hopping on uneven crutches."

Came across this in my KINDLE2 what a sweet little story. Just a short story of a conversation on a train by 3 different people...it was amazing really. I am so happy that I read it!

Beautifully written passages, very entertaining read. It made me want to live in Africa.

Another of the lets' jump on the 'bandwagon' of dead/past celebrities and sweep the reader along in a tidal wave of wild outrageous tales about the subjects in question. Sugarman did have a solid front row seat many times, but he doesn't bring much new or adds any insights of great value to the story of Morrison,Manzarek,Densmore, and Krieger.

Someone already said that you either love or hate this book. Well, I'm firmly on the hating side. There are many elements I find lacking, but the main ones (in my opinion) are: the print--slabs of text without paragraphs and even dialogues jammed in without separation, extremely unappetizing to read; characterization--the characters are undeveloped and unconvincing in every aspect; the story--undoubtedly rigorously researched historical period didn't translate into a captivating story and the ending seems insulting for the reader, rushed and without even trying to be convincing. I wish I can get back the time wasted on this book.

Not as good as the others. It was difficult for me to finish this one.

You know how you "get" a lot more of a Simpson's or Family Guy episode if you're tuned in to pop culture? This is like that, but with European history, classical literature, secret societies and mysticism. Those are all subjects I've made a point of studying, and I suspect I only "got" about half of the references in this insanely clever story. Eco is one erudite mofo.

I found this at a garage sale when I was a young girl. There were sanitary belts involved and I was so confused. I'm pretty sure more of this book focused on Margaret's crisis of faith and self, but all I remember are those weird menstrual torture devices.
