I really like the flow of the book, very well done, graphically pleasing and easy to follow. The story was definitely disturbing, while it has slight similarities to other ghost/haunting stories, the lessons Anya learns because of this ghost are eye-opening. A great read for any young woman "in love" with an uncatchable guy. I originally decided to read this because another book I was reading was frequently referring to this story, but for the life of me I cannot remember what book it was....

I'm surprised more people haven't read this. It's a very good mystery! Read from an ARC, unfortunately from several years ago. #hugereadingpile

My favorite movie and now my favorite book! Included are three of Capote's short stories and I have run through them, hardly being able to wait for the end. I get lost in his stories and am always disappointed when they end. I am talking miss-my-stop-on-the-train good reading. Norman Mailer said, "He writes the best sentences word for word, rhythm upon rhythm." I couldn't agree more!

"Who's there?" I demanded. "I am," a voice whispered. "I'm coming for you." After reading those lines in the 1st chapter, I thought for sure this book would be a thriller from start to finish. However, I was disappointed because the story slowed down way too much in the middle. The end was good enough to qualify as an acceptable horror story but overall the book was too slow for my liking. One positive is that this Sunshine State book is short and easy to read. (174 pages)

this book is awesome...it is one of my favorites. the only downside is that it is really long, so you can't read it over and over again.

Three stars are given only for two choice stories in here. The rest are pretty horrible. (Regarding Volume 4.)

If I could give it more stars, I would. This is one of the Great American novels. Historically accurate. Compelling characters and vivid descriptions of one of the most wrenching times in American history. If you have dismissed it as "chick lit" or some bodice-ripping romance, please - pick it up and give it a go. Discover Scarlett O'Hare as not a ditzy Southern belle, but as a modern American feminist - intent on controlling her own destiny in a world designed to keep her from doing just that.

These short stories, ones that explain supernatural cosmic phenomena in mythical, human terms, are the type of stories I hope I can conjure for my kids. It's occasionally dense and confusing, but I think that's the point: it's nigh impossible to picture the formation of the universe, so why not try? This is worth it for the first story alone. I like the rest to varying degrees, but the first one is perfect.

The Devil in the White City intrigued me in the beginning--well written popular history about the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago interwoven with the story of a creepy serial killer. What was not to like? In the end, however, I thought the two plot threads were not connected enough to carry the book forward as a whole. They coincided merely as a matter of time and place; the murderer had nothing to do with the World's Fair, especially not the endless meetings and professional squabbles with which Larson bogged down the narrative. If a reader was interested in the politics and mechanics of how the World's Fair was built on a short time-table, she could get away neatly with reading only half the book, and a reader interested in the murders could quite contentedly read the other half. So the book did not work as a hole, yet neither half could stand on its own. If I wanted to read a decent history of the World's Fair, The Devil in the White City leaves too much out to qualify--I personally would have looked for a broader history of the fair's reach in American culture, rather than the narrower scope of this book, which focuses on the individual architects and designers who built the fair and argued with one another quite a lot. I must admit, though, that Larson drew his characters well enough that I was initially interested in the architects and designers--but as the book wore on, my interest waned. Larson's approach to the serial killer plot differed significantly from traditional stories on the same subject. Usually the reader follows the detective as he learns the details of the murderer's crimes. Here, we are with the murderer, H. H. Holmes, from the beginning and follow his grisly deeds as they happen. The problem with this approach is that as the book moves forward, the climax ought to be the murderer's capture and trial, since it cannot be murders themselves, which seem sadly commonplace by the end of the book, they've happened so often. But because the reader already knows exactly how Holmes committed his crimes, who he murdered, and what he did with their bodies, following the detective and the jury would be redundant. So in a few last chapters, Larson rushes through Holmes' capture, trial, and execution in an abrupt and unsatisfying conclusion. Larson's structure for this plot line just didn't work. All that said, the book was not all bad. The writing was accessible and good, and Larson did his best to make history suspenseful, which is difficult given that we all know the outcome. The fair gets built, the murderer is captured. No surprises there. Finally, I confess that I skipped generous portions of the World's Fair plot line.
